Beating a dead horse - last time, thoughts on NA engine vs. TT

I have not been able to drive the NA e550 and then the TT engine back to back, so I do not have the first hand experience to compare.

I know it has been discussed in the past (but not nearly as much as the old e55 vs. e63 debates). But, anyone who has had BOTH cars - can you discuss the difference in performance - real or perceived.

I am looking at a 2011 e550 - can save nearly $8k over a similarly equipped 2012, and just wanting to consider the differences - however slight, one more time.

Thanks........

TTV8 has more power (perceived and real) and significantly more power can be achieved with a simple ECU tune. TTV8 is also more efficient - better MPG. With a stage 1 ECU tune from OE Tuning, not only did I realize a significant increase in power more (dyno'd at 430WHP, 555WTQ) and associated performance increase - but also getting better MPG.

The NA V8 stock exhaust sounds better than the TTV8 stock exhaust primarily due to turbo quieting down but that can be remedied easily (resonator delete, new mufflers, etc.). Both engines are bulletproof and very reliable if well maintained. Stock throttle response seemed a bit peppier on NA VA but the ECU tune made the throttle response on the TTV8 much better.

Is the $8K difference just in the year / engine? Is seems like a lot between 2011 and 2012 with everything else similar (miles, options, etc.).

Thanks for the reply.

Its actually between a 2011 vs. 2013, both with similar miles and P2 options. Not as many CPO'd e550's nearby.

Then find a 2012 E550 which has the TTV8 and likely half the difference. For $8k go with 2013 (primarily for Factory Warranty which is likely still in effect).

I'd also suggest expanding your search area. Although I do agree CPO E550s are hard to find.

^This is what I've been hearing universally from everyone whose had or driven both.

I have driven both but not back to back. While there is a difference in the engines (IIRC half second quicker to 60 for the TTv8), both have more than adequate power. But if more power appeals to you, then you shouldn't be asking this question.

All things being equal, I would go with the newer car. You won't regret it.

Get the 2013 - More HP and Torque, future potential for even MORE HP with tune, No Airmatic issues.

If it's a budget issue, then keep looking for a better deal on a 2012-2013.

Did I mention, It's faster!!!!
