my first benz, 2013 e550
hi all. just picked up the new ride yesterday, couldn't be happier so far. this thing is a monster.
coming from an older lexus that i loved, the only thing i can't figure out so far - does this car have rain sensing wipers? if so, how do i turn them on?

Yes, rain sensing wipers. No need to turn on, it's always active.
What state do you live in and what options are on the car? CPO?? Mileage? Price?
Edit : correction, position "I" activates it.

I have to turn my rain sensing on, there is a I, II, and I believe III on the wiper stalk that initiates the rain sensing, each tick indicating a more vigorous response to the rainfall
Congrats ... It's a fast beast isn't it!?

they weren't coming on this morning. i'll have to do some more experimentation i guess.
i'm in KY, it has the P2 package. Pano roof, pretty much everything except airmatic. CPO, 28k miles. I paid just over 40 for it, which is a little high but I wanted this car, so screw it!

it's probably too much car for me, to be honest. i find that i'm quite happy plodding along in ECO mode, except when someone pisses me off. Then it's really fun to tap the throttle and disappear!

Yes, I stand corrected....thank you. I was thinking of my wife's RX330, which is always "on", when in the wiper position.

Read the Operator's Manual very carefully and highlight or make notes. Then do same for COMAND Manual. Tremendous amount of information in them. Take time to read the Maintenance Manual as well.
As for wipers, you do have to turn them on. On mine, it is a couple of settings on the stalk-one for slow and one for faster. If it starts to rain harder, they automatically go to regular speeds.
You have to be able to turn them off, otherwise those using automatic carwashes would end up with bent wiper arms.
Doubt that any manufacturer would have them always "on."
Happy Motoring!

nice ride. plenty of good information on here about all the features as you get to each of them. I do find my wipers in sensing mode don't always slow when the rain does. So I do have to turn them off and then back on to get them to adjust the speed after they go very fast after a heavy rain.

this thing drinks some gas in city driving, i'll say that about it. of course, first 24 hours of ownership i'm probably a little throttle happy.
all of that reading sounds like a lot of work. i work so that when i'm off work i can not work. though i do probably need to at least read the COMAND manual because that thing is a lot to take in. I'm coming from a 2004 that didn't have a screen in the dash. what i WILL do for sure though, is press every button and mess things up and play with it until i mostly know how to work stuff!
thank you!
the wipers on my lexus did the exact same thing periodically, with the same solution. i suspect that droplets of widely differing sizes hitting the wind screen at highly variable directions and velocities makes getting the "sensing" perfect virtually impossible. if it works okay 90% of the time i'll be happy.

Congrats. Very nice car, then again I'm awfully biased ... I bought a '12 E550 just over a year ago and also came out of an older Lexus GS430. There's another former Lexus owner on here that's driving an E400 or E550 now. Small world!

This beast is a 12 second car... Not much out there percentage wise of cars on the road that will hold a candle to that

Thank you! Soon!
Thank you. I loved the Lexus (still do), but I decided it was time for something with a *little* more fire in its belly. I may have overdone it, coming from a 2004 ES330!
that makes it faster than my childhood dream car, the testarossa. which is ridiculous.

Congrats on the new ride. I pick up my '13 E550 tomorrow. I think you got a pretty good deal, considering you have the pano roof and "pretty much everything" in addition to being CPO. Mine doesn't have pano, lane sensing, Distronic, or Airmatic, and went for 37k with 40k miles... so I'd say you may have gotten a better deal than me haha (except mine is black, and I like my ladies in a little black dress)

Another Ex Lexus Owner here, 04 GS430... after 12 years of ownership it was just time for something else. Good reliable car.
The E550 is something you like to drive, the Lexus was a good point A to Point B car.

Thank you! It's a hell of a way to join the family! I'm already dreaming of an E63 next time.
Hey man, small world and thank you! It was at Mercedes of Buckhead in Atlanta. Found it on the mbusa.com CPO site.

semi off topic but i thought i'd post my thoughts about the various competitors that i test drove before settling on the E550:
BMW 550ix - engine very similar to the E550's. Very fast car. Kind of boring looking inside and out IMO, I have trouble telling various BMW's apart. Harder ride than the merc, less comfortable seats.
Audi A6/S6 - drove both. The S6 was a freaking monster, the A6 was boring. Beautiful cars inside and out. Top quality materials and components. I liked the nav/computer system best on these cars, but the seats sucked. Dealbreaker.
Lexus GS350/GS-F - drove both. The GS-F, again, is a MONSTER. Much harder ride than the average lex though, and way out of my price range. GS350 was a very nice ride, very comfortable car, but about as much passion as a tree stump.
Porsche Panamera 4S - gorgeous exterior IMO, though I know this car is controversial in that area. Feels as fast as the Merc although I'm not sure whether or not it actually is. Handling was incredible. Interior not as attractive as the E IMO. Seats provided more lateral stability, which I liked, but less comfortable overall. It was a hard choice between this and the benz.
Ultimately the benz won because it is the best of all worlds. Beautiful inside and out, luxurious ride, great seats, ridiculous engine. Another thing I like best on the E550 is the brakes. Fantastic stopping power, but smooth and buttery. This car is just really civilized at any speed and under most any conditions. Super stable and planted. It keeps putting smiles on my face. Turning 90 degrees at 15 mph? Beautifully easy steering made me smile. Off ramp with stiff curve at 60mph? It hugged that curve like it never wanted to let go, huge smile. Floor it at a stop? Giggles. Floor it at 80mph? Giggles. It's just a really rewarding car to drive. I feel very fortunate to have it.

Very nice car. They have the white 2012 I was looking at, but decided against due to the wood trimmed steering wheel.

They were the comfort seats. And saying they sucked is maybe an exaggeration, they just sucked compared to the benz and the porsche and the lexus. About even with the BMW maybe.
