first month of ownership impressions (2013 E550 4matic)
I put a screw through a tire on day 2 of possessing the vehicle, so got to experience the roadside assistance, service, and warranty side of things right away (i bought the wheel & tire coverage). I was disappointed to discover that my full size luxury sedan had a doughnut instead of a full size spare, but everything else was smooth and easy sailing, and I had a brand new tire in a few days at no cost to me (happened on a saturday, so service was closed).
i'm a pretty sedate, casual driver typically. my last car was slow by almost any reasonable standard, and i'm too old and cautious for stop light drag races anyway. however, i took an S7's bait one night and surprised the hell out of him (and me). that was fun.
General impressions:
I don't even know what to say about the engine. It's much more than any reasonable person needs. I am not a reasonable person, it turns out.
In spite of a generally very good suspension, this car does not like potholes at all. They are jarring to say the least. However, it stays surprisingly flat in curves, and it has a pretty crazy amount of grip. And over less dramatic bumps and imperfections, it is quite smooth.
The seats are fantastic in my opinion. I wish I had the active whatever-it's-called or better side bolstering in general but they are very comfortable once adjusted appropriately. I didn't even discover the lumbar support buttons until a couple of days ago. Now i'm really happy with them. The seat heaters get HOT, which for someone like me with a bad back is amazing. I know not everyone agrees, but I find the ventilation in the seats to work well, too. It would probably be better if there were an A/C duct feeding into it but it's substantially better than nothing.
From a tall person who again has a bad back - this car is incredibly easy to get in and out of compared to other cars in its class. The door opening and seat position are perfect. I don't have to tweak my neck to get my giant melon inside, which is fantastic.
Keyless-go is great. Having used it for a while now, I would really miss it if I didn't have it. Makes me wish the front door on my house had a similar system operating, so i didn't have to get my keys out, ever.
I don't trust the navigation compared to google maps. I wish that I did. I also wish that iPhone integration was better in general. I REALLY wish that I could control Spotify more completely from the COMAND interface (search, browse playlists, etc). Most of all perhaps, I wish that car manufacturers in general would recognize that everyone in the world wants their phone out (not in the glovebox or in some cubby) and preferably visible and give us somewhere like that to put them.
Overall, I absolutely love the car so far. I've had to fill it up every two days if that says anything.
As far as phone integration, that has just come up to full speed in 2016 vehicles with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. I find the bluetooth interface pretty good for phone, and OK for music, but mostly I keep a large capacity iPod in the console or listen to Sirius. I use phone navigation over built-in 9 times out of 10 just because it's much quicker to tell my phone where I want to go than try to punch it in the car interface.
Really wish I had the dynamic seats, but pretty rare option. The seat ventilation does nearly nothing for me. New Dodges and Hyundais have some better options as standard such as Active cooled seats and heated/cooled beverage holders. Mercedes is slacking a little in the bells / whistles / tech area I think. That seems to be what sells cars these days as engines are shrinking.
