you need 1) ensure the 'flashware' (firmware) is the latest, *AND* 2) install an 'activator' from a 3rd party such as Vladimir on ebay. the activator won't work without the latest flashware. if you forward your VIN to vladimir he can tell you if you have the correct firmware, there's 3 separate modules that need to be flashed, on my late production MY 2016, only 1 was correct, the other two still needed updates.
the buzzword to get the dealer to update the flashware is to report you are having issues with reliable bluetooth connectivity, that sometimes it works, but sometimes it doesn't and there's no discernable pattern. Don't even mention CarPlay to Mercedes, they do not support that feature on this model year car. expect to pay up to an hours labor for the flashware upgrade.
But this head unit was successfully actived carplay as well as run Carplay in another w212 2013 facelift but when Did on my car ( the same w212 2013), it did not work as you saw

and the best part is, you have a combination of parts that Mercedes never made, so whomever codes that, will need to /really/ understand how it all works, as there's no recipe in Mercedes codebooks.
Hey Chris I hope you're well, I have a 2016 E220 BlueTEC with NTG 5s1, how do I get the AMG dials/dynamic select like you have in the videos? It would be nice to see things like nm, oil temp etc

I know that this topic is on and on again? But before I'm going to start retrofitting comand 5.1 to my w212 I'd like to know that I have every single thing that I need. Unfortunately all the information here, is in a little mess and im not sure if I managed to understand it in a proper way.

I've managed to buy a cheap 5.1 from W212 with damaged buttons.
I was trying to repaint buttons but with no luck. So. I have found a cheap 5.1 form CLA. Now I have to switch only frames and front control panels and its going to fit my car perfectly. I've managed to disassemble the whole control panel and repaint the frame but the buttons are too damaged.
And Now. Guys. What do I need more? I've read that I need scroll-knob with four buttons.But that info was given with pre-facelift modifications. So do I have to change it?
Another case is that blue plug on the screen. I suppose I have to buy new wire harness from comand to the screen? Yes?
And now. I wonder, maybe instead using w212 comand which looks much worse should I use the 5.1 from CLA? Do you know are there any differences in the software? Or the only difference is the frame?
I need your generous help. I did a retrofit from ntg 4.7 to ntg5s1 in my car, W212 facelift with factory rear view camera. The radio is now working at 100%. I changed the cable connecting the rear view camera - radio and the rear view camera.
But I have a problem, Vediamo (rvc218.cbf) and Xentry don't recognize the new rear view camera. How can I encode the new rear view camera with vediamo? On the radio I already have the rear view camera menu active.
My 2016 COMAND NTG 5s1 retrofit into my 2010 W207.

7. Camera and cablekit
8. Screen frame
9. New joystick with 4 buttons
10. Pincode
11. Maps with activation code
I am experimenting alot with programming and activating of menues. I got the AMG logo to start it of. And alot else so far.
So ALL that works now but
only PROBLEMS so far:
Navigation dont get a speed signal. So maps stop moving when it loses satelites.
Media dont showup in cluster. All else show up and work. Radio,Navi.phone...
AMG dails, then middle big one dont work. Guess it is also speed signal issue.
Camera dont send video
I doing repin ntg 5.1 wakeup for 10 second after that shut down again

heck, i had to update my 2016 w212 (build 2016-03-11).. my indie's scanner said I had the 9_15 version but vladimir said my car wasn't upgraded, and indeed, it did not work, til I took it to the dealer and paid them to upgrade it, THEN it worked, and it works great!.
Vladimir was on ebay, but I can't find his contact info now. it was several years ago when I did mine. There's other folks who can recode it, Calibenz on this forum does a whole bunch of coding work on a subscription basis.

Fwiw, what the rest of the world calls firmware, Mercedes calls "flashware"... Tell the dealer service folks you're having intermittent problems playing mp3 files on USB sticks, and you read online that a flashware update should fix it, they might charge you for an hour or so of labor, which was $200 here in the SFBA. Once that's done, yeah, a code activator should work.
