changing instrument clusters

Im having weird issues on my gauge cluster. The lcd will flicker on and off and sometimes the lighting behind the speedo flashes as well. So the dealer wants to diagnose it and fix it but i dont want to spend 1000s of dollars on a repair i can do myself? my question is can i buy a used one and swap them out? I heard our cars store our mileage etc in the computer so would the new cluster just pick up where the old one left off? Also would all my service items still be on the same schedule (mileage) as before?

thanks

btw this is for a 2012 e350 4matic

you can do it but you need a software to marry the "new" cluster to your car which only the dealer or a reputable indy has.

dealer will cost you an arm and a leg just for labor, not to mention the new cluster. try goin to an indy who can do it. might be able to save a few hundred if you can get a good used cluster. some indys have contacts with wreckers.

basically for your new cluster to work with your car, remember the mileage and what have you.
