New NY Tint Law - Now Part of Inspection
It looks like us New Yorkers will need to get our tints removed before our next inspection unless the tints are at 70 percent, which is rarely the case. A new law has been passed and has been in effect since January 1, 2017.
I called around this morning to some shops and they said they have to take this seriously. The car will fail if the tint is darker than 70 percent.
What a bummer. Bye bye tints in NY. Just when I was going to get 35 percent all around.
Paying 200 bucks to get 70 percent tint is probably not worth it for those who want tints.
My car has very light tint on it right now which was done by the previous owner. Maybe I am already at 70, but I will need to get it checked.

Yet they have their limo tinted SUVs so you can't see them messing around on their laptops and almost causing accidents lol... I guess time will tell. Who passes these laws anyway? Need to find them a new job in 2018...

Tinted windows have been illegal in NJ for as long as i remember. Here you can either go to DMV or an authorized inspection center which are normally gas stations or indy shops. If you know somebody who can hook you up then you're good. I'm sure NY is gonna be the same as time passes and more places get comfortable with the law.
