24,000 miles - Check Engine Light On

24,000 miles - Check Engine Light On

So i was driving along happy as a clam, and the dreaded check engine light came on. Initial thought was maybe the gas cap since i filled up yesterday but it was tight and secure, light still on. Engine performs geeat, no weird noises or anything. It fires right up and i dont feel like there is any issue with the direct injection. The car has just under 24k miles.

I called my dealer and they gave me an appointment for Friday. The earliest i could get it is this Friday. Should i be worried and ask them to try and get me in sooner? The car feels fine. Any ideas what it can be ?

What is your temperature gauge reading? Does it appear to be running a little cooler at all? A bad thermostat will cause a CEL. You can drive on it with no problem until replaced.

Temperature is normal, same as it has always been. Still driving the car and it feels good. I am scheduled for Friday morning with my dealer, so ill post up what the problem was.

Sounds good. Probably an O2 sensor then, or something simple.

I would not worry about, if the problem was severe, there would have been other warning lights and drivability issues.

I'd buy a simple OBD2 reader and find the code(s) before going to a dealer, or just swing by Autozone and have them read it for free. You can also use these tools to eraase codes, and see if they come back.

Doing your own diagnostics saves money when out of warranty, and prevents you from paying for items that don't need to be fixed by dishonest mechanics.

If in warranty - ignore everything I just said.

So what was the code? An OBDII scanner is pretty much a standard item to have in a toolbox these days. A cheap basic one like the BAFX on Amazon is about $22 and pairs with Android. I use an X431 Plus which will also ready MB specific codes and they're on eBay for $59. Once you have the code, it's easy to do a search on the forum and sees what comes up. Lots of time it can be a simple fix.

I just dropped off the car so im not sure yet what the code was but im sure they ill let me know today or tomorrow. Whipping around a little C class cabroilet for a few days. Ill keep you guys posted as to the code and solution.

Quick update:

I just got the call back and it seems that the fuel pressure is too high for some reason, they are going to send a sample to the lab for further diagnosis. The technician asked me if i have been experiencing a lack of power and its quite the opposite the car feels quicker. Lot of questions still in the air, i will keep you guys updated.
