Navigation Update
OK....just installed the Navigation Update Command 2017. Took longer than normal...over 2 hours but all seems well. I am NOT a fan of MB navigation update program but find that once loaded it is convenient to use in the car.
Note that I did NOT have to enter an activation key or password to load so it looks like it can be used in another E Class (MY 10-11). PM me if you have an interest in the update.

Just installed the update so will have to wait for a trip to see if its worth anything. Note that I did NOT pay $249 + (there are deals to be had)

My SA asked me 250$ for maps upgrade.
My Garmin Nuvi 1390 LT which cost me 135$ has lifetime maps(purchased 2011 and still going on solid, after abusing it in rain, on Motorcycle).
I know I'm going to trigger some forum members here, and I'm not afraid to ask the question.
1. Is there any other car manufacturer, that offers lifetime map upgrade for free?
2. Why do they have to charge us for maps? The navigation package is not free, when
buying a new car, right?
It is like buying a gaming console for 500$, and paying 60$ for each game; Users from Gaming community say the same thing, when they charge that much for each game, either the console should be cheaper or actually free.
or buying Windows or Mac and paying 20$ for each OS upgrade(until they made it free).
This should be more like Value Added Service.

Personally, having live traffic in my Ford, I would not spend even $1 on update that doesn't have it.
US is not building too many roads lately, so map update is not giving you much.
What I noticed over the years, the software got a bit better.
The 2008 MB GPS is no longer showing my position in the middle of the lake like 2001 program did.

I believe I have live traffic too, which is kind of annoying long statement, which eventually grew on me using it for few times though, just the new routes and maps are not being updated.
Meanwhile, I locally saved maps on my phone, Google Offline Maps and just for fun, I had Here maps from Nokia, which saved whole east coast, I believe.
Same with Garmin Nuvi 1390, with East coast data.

More companies need to adopt a Tesla like thing where the car just downloads the newest maps, firmware, and what not, but obviously they want to nickel and dime us for everything so it probably won't happen for awhile.

2. They charge us so they can squeeze every cent out of us. I can understand when the maps were on CD/DVD, but now that everything is USB/HD based, they should just be able to hook it up to the computer at the dealership and upgrade us for free.

1. Well not exactly free, but you can get map updates for BMW for only $30 bucks or so...

I believe it really depends on which version of NTG you have. I think it will work for 2010-2011 and in 2012 they went with a newer version which requires a key. Not sure if the newer version of NTG might have kicked in on some late 2011 models so the month might be important too. If I recall correctly, it's NTG4.5.

I can't remember the last time I used the navigation in the car. Probably months ago on my last road trip - I like how on the highway it tells you the distance to the upcoming exits.

I got the same email and called to schedule an appointment. When I showed up the service advisor said "oh, you have to order a disk for that". He called the service manager who confirmed that and then said " don't bother unless you are having issues". What a waste of my time.

Anyway mine is a genuine MB update and if anyone is interested PM me.

I just bought my 2011 E350 a few months ago. Nav had never been updated and I live in Atlanta, GA where our state tree is the road cone. I ordered the 2017 map update from a website because our roads have changed a lot since 2011 and did the update myself. It did take a couple of hours. I almost put the battery minder on the car because I was afraid it was going to run down the battery. Probably wouldn't have been a bad idea.

For those who have performed the Nav update, I couldn't tell from the prior posts whether there are any changes to the interface beyond more current maps. In other words, does anything look different (i.e., better) after the update? I am guessing that the interface does not change with the update but am curious to hear.
Thanks!
Thanks!

The interface did not really change. If you ever use the 3D map view option it seems to have a better look but the normal street view is pretty much the same.

In this smartphone gen, with unlimited data(few networks), live traffic and auto-rerouting(Google Maps, to my knowledge) - when connected to internet or offline data storage capabilities; It is not worth the shelling out 250$ to MB. IMHO.
