Keep car & buy extended warranty, instead of replace with new car...

My wife's 2015 E400 sedan has a year left on her 4/50 factory warranty. Been doing some research about new 2017 & possibly 2018 new E sedans, or purchase extended warranty & keep to 7 years.

Love the performance of the current bi-turbo V6 engine of the E400. Mercedes don't make it anymore, only 2.0L turbo inline- 4 now with 241 hp. My brother also went from V6 to inline 4 turbo in his BMW & it felt really weak for such a big & heavy car.
Also hate getting raped by the dealer when trading in for new car.

Got a good quote from MB dealer where we orig bought, for 3 more years of bumper-bumper MB extended warranty to 7/84 for $2050.
Thinking of purchasing that soon & keep her for a few more yrs...

Anyone in the same situation, & looking to trade in for newer model soon?

Thoughts...?

I would keep that car and get the extended warranty. Unless you can get a new AMG E43 instead of an E300 :B

The E400 is your wife's car. What does she want to do? You mention that the E400 is hers but the rest of the thread seems to focus on your thoughts.

It seems you answered your own thoughts, mainly to keep the car. Its usually cheaper, don't be driven strictly by warranty if you like the car and it's been generally dependable. The quote you got seems ok but you can also shop for extended warranty, there's an entire section in mbworld about them.

Guess you've got to ask yourself if you would buy the car you've got today over the new ones. Personally speaking, I think what you've got is worth keeping, as it seems to be on track as one of the last true engines. One of the reasons I wanted an W212 was for a normally aspirated V6 engine in the garage, and not an overly-boosted 4 again (already have that in my VW). The turbo 4 in general is a good setup, but thinking it's getting a little overdone these days and not convinced they're going to be very reliable when matched to a heavy vehicle. In my VW, it's fine because the car is so light in general. But in a heavy sedan (and/or especially in a heavy SUV - like the Volvo XC90), I think i'd like to see the results in a few years before diving into that side of the pool.

A bi-turbo V6 sounds like a golden gem, and not sure I'd be willing to part with it myself! If I got bored with the car, I'd maybe look to buy another cheaper "toy" car to go along with it to give yourself a break from driving it every single day.

Looking at a similarly equiped C43, 3.0L V6 bi-turbo but close to $60K, wife thinks it might be too small.

E43, same 3.0L V6 bi-turbo, close to $80K.

Yeah, now thinking more about getting extended warranty & keep her for a while....

That's what I did. Before the seven years runs out, make sure to request everything you can under warranty.

Fiscal responsibility would suggest keeping the used car unless the ongoing repair cost supersede the cost of a replacement. I used to buy new cars when my existing vehicle started having hiccups, not anymore.

It doesn't appear a 2015 should be replaced unless you just don't like it.

You'd probably have to go to an E43 in order to keep a V6 in there. That price isn't bad, but it makes me wonder if it's really an MB warranty as normally you hear of 7/75 or 7/100. Didn't know there was a 7/84 option, must be rare if it's an MB one. I'd also check with the vendors in the extended warranty subforum. They usually end up beating the price of the local dealers. And it's an extended warranty which isn't the same as the bumper to bumper warranty. Still covers a lot but not as much as the bumper to bumper.

You're right, it's 7/75, with zero deductible, genuine MB.
Also, we're assuming this extra 3 years' warranty will cover most of the orig factory bumper/bumper. So what's the main items not covered (besides wearables)?

Thanks,

You'll have to read the warranty coverage. It's not the same as bumper to bumper. The big difference is probably cosmetic coverage. The faded wood was only part of the original factory warranty, CPO and extended didn't cover it. But faded wood I think was fixed by 2014 so you should be ok. And you mind as well have the dealer check everything before the original warranty expires. You can also go to the extended warranty forum and pick up a 3 service pack, it's a reasonable discount if you get it at the right interval and go to the dealer.

The E400 W213 is supposed to be available as a 2018 model.

IIRC the extended MB warranty (up to 3 years, 100k miles) has only a few exclusions - glass, trim and batteries. Best to read the fine print as cetialpha5 suggests.

Just went to dealer & purchased the extended warranty.
Easy transaction.
But while there, my former saleswoman enticed me with the 2018 E400 coupe. Very nice, but stickers at $70K+.
But my wife still want a 4 door sedan, & I told her that we already have the best car in the world, called: "Paid Off..."

Can you share the exclusions in the fine print so we know what they currently are?

Yep.
Exclusions almost exactly like current bumper/bumper, those items like I'd expect to pay as user wear & tear items....

OP, where did you get the quote for extended warranty? Mine is about to expire in half a year and I want to get that too.
Here the dealer is quoting $35k for my 2014 E350.

Check the extended warranty forum. There are a number of dealers selling extended warranty at a discount.
a 3 year 75k extension should be a little over $2k.

She was very nice & professional. We exchanged a few emails & answered all my questions, esp "what if I decided to sell/trade in my car before the 7 yrs?", which she replied that MB will refund all the $2070 up to 4 yrs, then prorated til 7 yrs. She could've done everything via phone, but I stopped by dealership anyways, she had all paperwork ready, charged cc, & out in less than 3 minutes.

Yeah, definitely get more quotes. $35k is a lot for an extended warranty, you can buy another car for that kind of money. As others said, they're normally in the 2-3k range. They also sell maintenance packages, but the discount doesn't appear to be that much.

Either it might be a typo of $3.5k for extended warranty or the actual cost/value for his used car is 35k

Yeah, or they don't call them stealerships for nothing.
