Rattle sound from underneath

Rattle sound from underneath
I have a 2014 E350 4Matic and it has a rattling sound coming from underneath when i drive at slow speed on uneven road surfaces. When I roll the windows down, it seems to be coming from under the driver seat . It is a metal to metal vibration kind of a sound. Maybe loose heatshield over the muffler?
I took it to a local non-reputable shop close to my home so they could raise it and see if there is anything obvious. The shop guy and i both looked under the car and nothing seemed loose including the muffler. I'm planning to take it to a Mercedes indy shop this week to get it checked out.
Has anyone had any experience with rattling sound coming from under the car? It would be nice to pin-point to any known problem areas in advance instead of letting them spend time/money searching. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

I haven't experienced anything like that. Last time I heard a rattle on a Mercedes was my W202, it was a loose fan/engine bearing or something. Fixed it and quiet again...
Now, direct injection "ping" and super-loud compressor/fan when A/C on...that's another story! lol

The exhaust tips seem to be a snug fit with pipe.
I took it to an indy MB shop close to my work...left the car there but they couldn't figure out and said they did not hear any rattle. They kinda seemed shady so I didn't argue much and not sure if they even paid attention when I said that this vibration/rattle is only heard at low speed less than 35 mph. When I pull in to covered garage at my work...the noise can be heard even louder as I cross over the joints.
Im afraid I may have to pay up to the dealer to diagnose and hopefully get fixed.

2014 e550; same rattle sound too. Took in for service and did road test, sound disappears.... really weird. The slightest bump would start it. I have airmatic. My next service will be taking to a different dealership. About a few months tho. Will check back if you don’t.

I've been hearing this rattle sound every day and it is very annoying in an otherwise quite cabin. Both places I've been to were unfit to identify the root cause which is probably going to be a simple fix. I've been avoiding going to the dealer so far because of time and cost. I'm out of warranty at 70k+ miles.

Put the car on a lift while it is running and idling in gear. get under the car and see if you can pin point it... a stethoscope will help. I had the same issue in mine. Checked all the obvious spots (wheel bearings, brakes, etc). Mine ended up being flakes of rust in the driveshaft. Very odd as the car was at about 40k miles at that point.

My old W210 with a ton of miles (150K+) had the Catalytic converter go. It was rattling like a baby rattle. Seems unlikely with these newer cars but just wanted to put that out there.

There was a pebble rattling around between the rear exhaust tip's outer cover and the pipe itself on our Wagon. You can check it by rapping on the exhaust tip with your hand and hear if there's something in there between the two layers of metal. Had to keep rapping on it for a few minutes so the loose pebble to fell out.
It's not uncommon for small rocks and pebbles to find there way in-between heat shields in the undercarriage and make rattle noises.

I've had the same issue, and i've taken it into 2 shops and neither has found the issue, and I know it, they weren't taking my complaint seriously. I haven't been able to find any information about this anywhere. But the scenario you've explained is exactly what I'm dealing with, and would like to find out how to fix it.

With the car on a lift, I was able to see where the driveshaft to the rear end was able to be separated from the yoke at the back end of it by removing a few bolts. Once I did so, I was able to drop the drive shaft a bit to and angle I could insert something and brush out what gravity did not resolve on it's own. Good luck. I am curious if this is the solution for you as well. Please report back with the results.

I have had that situation twice. Once was on my rear subframe had rusted away from the rest of the car the other one was when I somehow contacted something under the car and my exhaust pipe was rubbing up against another piece of metal underneath the car
