Hello guys,
I'm ordering 35% NC legal solid black tint for my 2014 E350 Sedan. My question is, what is the length of the AS1 line? is it more than 5 inches?
and a really embarrassing question here: where is the AS1 line marked on the windshield? I may have not looked at it properly.
Thanks.
Funny you should ask... I had my windshield strip installed just yesterday.
On my car, there was no AS1 marking on the windshield. I suspect there is no marking on any recent MB windshield, at least not on any W212 from 2010+. So, don't be embarrassed... You didn't miss seeing it, because it is not there...
Here in Texas, when the mark is not present, state law stipulates that windshield header tinting can't extend more than 5" below the black windscreen surround. Any good tint shop will know the legal limit for that state. In CA for instance, windshield tint is NOT permitted at all, or so I'm told.
The Sunmasters shop I visited had a computerized tint cutting machine, and the MB template file for cutting the tint to the proper W212 curve. Since the 5" falls just short of the surround under the forward camera in the middle, the computerized program cut the tint in two pieces, one for each side of the central pod. Because of the 2-piece configuration, you will have more options on tint type and density to choose from. I had Madico 20% installed. I did this to provide more UV protection for the dashboard walnut trim.
Thank You for the information.
I'm scared to get pulled over for 20% and sticking to law of 35%
Even though I had my inspection a month ago, that means I have 10 months to worry about replacing it with legal % if it fails in the inspection. Still can't decide.
Anyway, 5" tint is enough of should I go standard 6"?
Pics of your car will be heavily appreciated
35% will work fine if your goal is to block UV on the sensitive wood triim in the dash, since I am told all tints block UV regardless of percentage density. The shop offered to install 5% limo tint on mine, as it apparently is allowed in TX. The critical part in this state is just the measurement. But if NC also limits the darkness in addition to the measurement, then of course you will want to adhere to those rules. Every state is different, and Sunmasters told me that is why MB doesn't tint windscreen headers at the factory any more.
This close-up shows where 5" falls at the middle. (The white item is a velcroed toll-tag) This is about all that I wanted, anyway.
nope, haven't heard about that in a long time, it didn't strike to me to look at that.
For the front, I may look for people nearby..!
Here in Florida, windshield tint (below the top line) is not allowed unless for medical reasons. Local shops will still tint them for cash off the books. IIRC I paid about $80. It makes a big difference with the mid-day sun on your legs. I can immediately notice the difference when in another person's car.
While mine was being done, I watched as a pickup truck had its whole windshield film removed in the next bay. The owner was clearly pissed as he told the technician, "OK, make it legal."
The strips look horrible and what confuses me is why people put darker ones on making it look worse due to the contrast. I say this because the new films block over 95% uv and heat with no tint to the film at all. Yes the film does the work even if it is clear.
So if protection and comfort is your goal then do a full windshield of film with no tint. It is awesome.
If protection, comfort and gangster is your goal then add tint percentages at risk depending on state.
If worried as should be in some states don’t give up. It is so easy to make a doctor appointment and complain about light sensitivity. I am not suggesting to be a liar but it is a legit complaint and pathetic that some states aren’t reasonable.

Knock on wood, I haven't gotten a tint check since I moved down here (or ever for that matter). But I run my sides and back at or above the legal limit, not lower. Maybe officers are trained to spot the clear tints or there little tint check cards reveal it. Or that truck guy was suspect with too dark tint on sides or back and they checked all the windows. But to the average person there is no way to tell the windshield is tinted if done with a quality product.
