Ok so I'm a cheapskate, don't remind me! Went over a speed bump and the check engine light came on. So I went to AutoZone and ran a scan. It said I needed a new fuel cap. Just got the OEM cap at the dealer. Will the check engine light or should it go out after I replaced the cap. If not what scanner can you recommend that won't break the bank and clear corrected codes? BTW, I'd like to run my own scans to make sure the cap was the only issue.

Flipping cap gasket works quite well too.
The code might take few driving cycles to clear itself, but with scanners as cheap as $5 - there is no excuse to not have one.

While I rarely agree with Kajtek1, I'd have to agree that you're a cheapskate. Splurge and spend $23 on the BAFX code scanner, has over 11,000 reviews on Amazon. If you keep your cheapskate ways, then you can find an ELM327 code readers for $5, but they have very few reviews and sometimes they don't work. They have a version for Apple too for $26.25, but if you're a real cheapskate, you shouldn't have Apple products...

You will have to clear the code first but if the code corrects itself as in doesn't return with a new cap then problem solved. Any scanner should be able to clear the current codes. The trick is to make sure they don't return. Get a decent scanner on Amazon and keep for future use. AS long as the vehicle is OBD2 it should work all vehicles. Some codes are model specific but most are universal. Example P1028. Coolant temperature below normal threshold. Simply put coolant is not getting above the minimum temperature range of the CT sensor. Most of the time it is usually failed thermostat that fails in the Open position to avoid overheating. The moral of the story is that a P0128 on a Mercedes should mean the same on a Ford, Chevy, Audi, Acura, Lexus...you get the idea.

I hope you didn't buy the whole cap, you only need to replace this gasket
