Trunk closing

We have a 2016 E400 with automatic trunk opening and closing with the foot under the bumper. Is there a way to desactivate the closing because it is dangerous when loading the trunk? We had the trunk closing on our heads while loading because our foot got under the bumper while pushing an item to the front of the trunk.

Talk with your dealer about removing that function. I don't think it can be done without their diagnostic tool.

Perhaps this will not help, but I look at this as a trainable moment. You learned over time to check the mirrors before changing lanes. You learned over time to put on the seatbelt, etc. I use the auto trunk all the time, and really like it. But it can take one or two mishaps to learn how to trip it, and how not to trip it.

This was easier to learn than retraining myself to find the gearshift lever at the wheel rather than on the console.

Turn off the auto trunk function, and you'll wish you had it on those many occasions in future when you have both hands full and need to open the trunk.

One additional thought... Deactivating the auto open/close can have unintended affects. Diasble the trunk sensor, and you may also disable some/all the other trunk functions, such as the power feature entirely, the trunk lid close buttons, or the ability to open (and close) the trunk from the door lever inside the car.

Imagine, even FORD's advertise this auto trunk feature... another generic Bosch design??

The first time the trunk decided to hit me stupid on the back of the head, I learned to keep my feet away from under the bumper and my head outside clear from the lid !!

I'd agree this is an unfinished design with safety gaps.

This foot sweep feature is now used across all car make lines and it’s on some van side sliding doors as well. I think it’s an ok feature( not great) but getting carried away. It should have a reverse feature in case something is in the way like the new Toyota RAV4.

Angry Trunk closing

Thank you for your responses. I now understand that I am not the only one making that mistake, especially when you are loading the trunk full. It is ok if you throw in a bag or two. But to you points, it is a safety issue and to find out that a generalist auto company has resolved the problem instead of a high end company is disheartening. Mercedes tag themselves as company at the leading edge of technology but they missed the boat on this one.

What would happen if you tape the front of the sensor{s} with aluminum tape?

Easy fix

Simply don’t carry the key with you and it’s not going to function without the key in your pocket.

Ouch

This just happened to me. 2021 E450. Car has so many sensors on it, how can it not detect large object in the way like half a human body even if automatic closing is accidentally triggered by the foot swipe? It came down on the top of my forehead HARD. Not happy.

This happened to me once... do you know about "pavlovian reflex"?

Now if I hear the trunk chime...DING ---> OUT!!
I immediately pull my head back out clear from the trunk or grab it with a hand.

I've never tried fitting a Toyota RAV4 into my trunk. Not big enuff.

Another "fix" or workaround is disable keyless by double pressing the lock button.

I would also say disable the trunk altogether with the valet switch in the glovebox but you need the trunk I guess.

MB's power trunk closes a lot faster than lots of makes, it is very time efficient. Which when it does hit you it does indeed hurt

I agree with "trainable moment." Yeah, it has come down on my, maybe 3x in 10yrs of ownership. And it reminds me, so there is that! But the few times it has been useful to open is, still, worth the price of admission IME.

But were I designing a go-around electronic mod, I'd like the open feature to be a foot sweep, but no need whatsoever for it to close with the foot, just none at all, IMO. Seriously, why is this not a default function; seems strange esp since it's "MB" we're talking about here.

Good point, it is usually that you want to use the foot swipe feature when your hand is full of groceries. When you placed the groceries in the trunk, perhaps you have a hand to push the button. not to mention the foot swipe doesn't work all the time.

That said, turns out, reverse kick increases the accuracy of it registering.

Just in case there is any confusion in regards to me mentioning reverse kick: https://mbworld.org/forums/w213-amg/...ml#post9082263

That is so true, no need closing, only opening function

This smart trunk foot sensing option is not a Mercedes original. It is available on Ford, Honda, Toyota and more.
So is Rain sensing, Keyless, DistronicPlus, Active BlindSpots, side airbags...

Perhaps it can be coded with XENTRY? You never know, maybe the Launch CReader has an option to change the parameters, worth a look?

fun around the back

Trunk automation is based on a separate module...
perhaps it's firmware exposes options to play with tools ??
