Trunk closing
We have a 2016 E400 with automatic trunk opening and closing with the foot under the bumper. Is there a way to desactivate the closing because it is dangerous when loading the trunk? We had the trunk closing on our heads while loading because our foot got under the bumper while pushing an item to the front of the trunk.

Talk with your dealer about removing that function. I don't think it can be done without their diagnostic tool.

Perhaps this will not help, but I look at this as a trainable moment. You learned over time to check the mirrors before changing lanes. You learned over time to put on the seatbelt, etc. I use the auto trunk all the time, and really like it. But it can take one or two mishaps to learn how to trip it, and how not to trip it.
This was easier to learn than retraining myself to find the gearshift lever at the wheel rather than on the console.
Turn off the auto trunk function, and you'll wish you had it on those many occasions in future when you have both hands full and need to open the trunk.

One additional thought... Deactivating the auto open/close can have unintended affects. Diasble the trunk sensor, and you may also disable some/all the other trunk functions, such as the power feature entirely, the trunk lid close buttons, or the ability to open (and close) the trunk from the door lever inside the car.

Imagine, even FORD's advertise this auto trunk feature... another generic Bosch design??
The first time the trunk decided to hit me stupid on the back of the head, I learned to keep my feet away from under the bumper and my head outside clear from the lid !!
I'd agree this is an unfinished design with safety gaps.

This foot sweep feature is now used across all car make lines and it’s on some van side sliding doors as well. I think it’s an ok feature( not great) but getting carried away. It should have a reverse feature in case something is in the way like the new Toyota RAV4.

Thank you for your responses. I now understand that I am not the only one making that mistake, especially when you are loading the trunk full. It is ok if you throw in a bag or two. But to you points, it is a safety issue and to find out that a generalist auto company has resolved the problem instead of a high end company is disheartening. Mercedes tag themselves as company at the leading edge of technology but they missed the boat on this one.
