Broken centre armrest dampener

The dampener in my left lid half have broken causing it to spring up violently when I open it. I've removed the rear vents thinking the dampener would be located there, but it only contained the springs for the lids. Anyone have a clue where the dampener are located? Or is it not fixable at all?

Here's a short video of it:

Made some progress today, but funny thing, somehow while working on the left lid, the right one broke as well.

Well I found out that the lids are removed by just pulling the metal bar behind the rear vents, the ones that the springs goes around.
I also found out that the dampener seems to be a white plastic cylinder with a notch on, inside the lid. The metal bar has a part with grooves that hooks up with the plastic cylinder. Unfortunately I could not get the top 'leather' and bottom on the lids apart, they seems to be glued together and I did not want to pry too hard. I could not figure out exactly how it works of what's broken from what I could see by prying the edges apart, but I would guess there are some kind of foam that the notch travels through to slow down the movement.

So that's where I'm at currently. Does anyone know if it's possible to separate the halves of the lids and not breaking them?

Both of my sides spring up like that, but my hand is obviously directly above it since that is the normal position of the arm when using it. I have never seen a dampened or slower opening console. Maybe some others can weigh in on whether their doors open slowly like your right-hand door.

Mine open slower like the right hand side in the video.

One side of mine is starting to open very slowly, like it has a worn spring or something. Not too worried about it right now.

konigstiger, is that an user on this forum?

I was thinking of buying a used pair of lids to replace them, but seeing this problem isn't as unusual as I thought it was, it might break again making replacing them pointless.
But I would love to fix them, the way they spring up now feels kinda "cheap" and not as classy as the rest of the car feels.

The lid is actually latched to the corner of the closure, when pressing the lid down too hard will chip off the corner of the latch, you may see the other side of the lid to compare.

One way to solve this as a cheap method is to use plastic putty to mould a corner hard enough to stick with the corner of the broken lid's latch that allows the latch to clip.

I put my gun there when I am driving (concealed weapon permit). A fast opening one would be an awesome option.

Interestingly enough, my 12 opens slowly but not equally with the passenger side door slower, my 13 they just both pop up quickly in unison, go figure.

That's a pretty appropriate response to the OP, it's all about the violence inherent in the system.

Or how these violent delights have violent ends.

You may just simply put on some dampening grease on the surface of the metal bar before inserting back to the lids. Good luck.

I did not fix this, I just accepted it as broken. So no update, sorry!

Hmm actually seems like a good idea! Thinking about it, maybe wrapping the metal bar with some teflon tape as well might fix it.
