Parking button

Are you trying to perpendicular park (back in) on an apartment complex lot?
By engaging the "P" button, do you mean the Parktronic enabling button on the center stack, or the "OK" button on the wheel when it asks you if you want the car to park itself?
All else considered, I don't understand how Parktronic has anything to do with engaging the transmission in its Parking gear before leaving the car.

Then someone brings in the Parktronic in the discussion obviously confusing the OP so he also talks about it. His problem has NOTHING TO DO WITH PARKTRONIC.
His car goes on park when he shuts off the engine and opens the door, just like my car does and how it is supposed to do.
His problem is simply the push button at the end of the gear shift stalk not making connection when he tries to put the car on PARK.

Than lot of us come here to have some fun and entertainment. When I am not here, I go to RV park and observe people driving big motorhomes into narrow spaces. That beats even boat ramp entertainment.
Where is the popcorn???

He then later clarifies:
So now we know. It doesn't go into park on the stalk, and he has to open his door in order for it to go into park. Never heard of such a problem.

Why is this his so difficult for you to understand?

Failure to go into park when commanded -- either electronically or mechanically -- has resulted in several safety recalls through the years among other vehicle makes and models. Decades ago I had a '73 Plymouth with a vague column shifter. (Park and Neutral sometimes blended together).. Eventually, all vehicles of that type were recalled for repair.
One would think that Mercedes-Benz tested the electronic gearshift stalk beyond destruction countless times, years ago.
Sooooo, I thought he was alluding to another problem. It's that simple.

MB of Cary, NC is a place I avoid.

Then the most stupid and I would say unsafe feature is that this car engine cannot be turned off until the gear selector is on PARK. I feel car should always turn off if you press the button to do so regardless of gear selection.
Why is this his so difficult for you to understand?
