Are you trying to perpendicular park (back in) on an apartment complex lot?
By engaging the "P" button, do you mean the Parktronic enabling button on the center stack, or the "OK" button on the wheel when it asks you if you want the car to park itself?
All else considered, I don't understand how Parktronic has anything to do with engaging the transmission in its Parking gear before leaving the car.

I’m opening a can of worms here as this post is really criticizing the community members posts. The OP says lately he has had an issue putting the car on park when pushing the button in the end of the gear shifter stalk. Lately means it worked before and he knows how it is supposed to work.
Then someone brings in the Parktronic in the discussion obviously confusing the OP so he also talks about it. His problem has NOTHING TO DO WITH PARKTRONIC.
His car goes on park when he shuts off the engine and opens the door, just like my car does and how it is supposed to do.
His problem is simply the push button at the end of the gear shift stalk not making connection when he tries to put the car on PARK.

"put the car on PARK." can be understood in at least 2 quite different ways. That's what happen when you talk about precision mechanics while using slang language.
Than lot of us come here to have some fun and entertainment. When I am not here, I go to RV park and observe people driving big motorhomes into narrow spaces. That beats even boat ramp entertainment.
Where is the popcorn???

He then later clarifies:
So now we know. It doesn't go into park on the stalk, and he has to open his door in order for it to go into park. Never heard of such a problem.

Again, this was the post. Does he mean the emergency parking button, the Parktronic button, or the parking button the the stalk? I would assume he meant the regular transmission park mode on the stalk; in which case he would have to use the electronic emergency parking brake instead.

Why is this his so difficult for you to understand?

Regardless what you think should be obvious or inferred from the original post, it was incredibly vague and borderline inaccurate. (Having a "parking issue" is different than "having an issue with the gear selector".) So yes, I was poking fun at him for that. Maybe partially due to being in IS for +20 years and getting sick of "It's just not working". Maybe not. Maybe next time he'll be more specific. Or maybe next time I'll get another chance to poke fun at him.

I questioned the original, cryptic question, because I have a hard time believing the button on the end of the stalk does not work 1,000,000% of the time, without fail, ever. If the "P" button on the end of the stalk can possibly fail, then all of us have a problem, because it is an imminent safety issue.
Failure to go into park when commanded -- either electronically or mechanically -- has resulted in several safety recalls through the years among other vehicle makes and models. Decades ago I had a '73 Plymouth with a vague column shifter. (Park and Neutral sometimes blended together).. Eventually, all vehicles of that type were recalled for repair.
One would think that Mercedes-Benz tested the electronic gearshift stalk beyond destruction countless times, years ago.
Sooooo, I thought he was alluding to another problem. It's that simple.

I'll never forget when I saw the SHOP FOREMAN backing a car out of the service bay and opening the door whilst in motion.......the car jerked into park in such an awkward way.......this was the same SHOP FOREMAN that backed my 2014 S out of the customer bay and curbed the front lip of my then, 2 month old car........and said "accidents happen". To which my reply was 'they often do with you'.

Lucky on that, I say. Mine does it if the car is still running. First time it happened I hadn't realized it, I was at a red light and opened the door for whatever reason, then when the light turned green I tried to accelerate and began to panic when it just sat and revved.

Then the most stupid and I would say unsafe feature is that this car engine cannot be turned off until the gear selector is on PARK. I feel car should always turn off if you press the button to do so regardless of gear selection.

You are missing the part lately. It worked for him and then does not. From all of his posts it is easy to understand it is about the transmission not going to PARK when he asks for it by pressing the button in the end of the stalk. This is very easy to understand especially when he says it goes to park when he opens the door. It has nothing to do with anything else than the transmission going to PARK.
Why is this his so difficult for you to understand?
