Hello cadetdrivr,

One question about your glovebox setup in the E Class, can you upload a picture of your setup? I saw that you were going to remove a black plastic piece from the glove box and fish the wires through there. I never saw the finished install unless I scrolled over it. (sorry in advanced)

Going to attempt this soon on my 2010 W212 with the NTG 4.0 Model

Also,

1. Where do you recommend that I buy the Joyeauto unit for the best pricing?
2. Can the steering wheel buttons work to change the track while using CarPlay Spotify?

Great Write-up. This has further convinced me that I need to do this to the stock head unit instead of buying the larger screen android head unit

Thank you for dedicating a lot of time to this thread not only with the write-up, but sticking around months after the fact to help troubleshoot with many different people. Almost positive you don't work for the company and you have done amazing work with this thread.

1. I would not recommend buying the Joyeauto unit. The original post also updated to say the same. The current Joyeauto units are not the newer generation and has more issues and complexity compared to the newer (RoadTop) units. Joyeauto also costs a lot more. You can refer to the original post to see where you decide to buy. I bought my RoadTop unit from Amazon, a little more expensive than Aliexpress, but I felt more safe with Amazon policies and also the shipping was only a few days compared to a couple weeks from Aliexpress.

2. On the RoadTop unit, none of steering buttons work for Carplay, only the Speech button works to use "hey Siri". Of course the volume buttons still control the volume, as with the center console volume knob. The center console "Next Track" or "Previous Track" also do not control CarPlay. The way to skip to the next track is by using the Control knob and selecting the "Next" button inside the Music App, our say "hey Siri, next song" or pressing the Speech button then saying "next song".

I'd grab a quick pic but the wife just left for work with the E-class. Needless to say, it does NOT look like a "professional" installation just sitting there exposed on the top shelf of the glovebox but since I don't use the glovebox for anything other than the owners's manual I'm fine with it as long as it's out of sight. I figure if I ever upgrade the box itself I'll hide it.

1. I'd not recommend the Joyeauto unit if you can wait a few weeks. Originally it looked like there were not "next-gen" units available for NTG 4.0 but now it looks like there are a couple potential options. Other members have ordered these units so I'd suggest waiting to hear about their experiences. I know one that was mentioned in the group buy thread still uses an external mic like the Joyeauto unit so it's internals may, or may not, be similar to the other next-gen NTG 4.5/4.7 units.

2. On the Joyeauto unit simply move the Comand controller left/right (not rotate) to skip tracks.

Thanks!
FWIW, that hardware looks externally identical to the Joyeauto unit and they left out a few things, like wiring a mic for calls (you can see the port for a mic in the pics) and placement of the hardware itself.

Personally if I had a car with NTG 4.5/4.7 I'd go with one of the next-gen units.

The one thing ALL these units have in common is a new wiring harness that plugs into both the Comand unit and the CarPlay unit so the work involved is similar for all the options, except for the newer ones that use the MB mic so one does not have to wire a mic.

Do the steering wheel controls (next/previous track) work on the RoadTop units, or does everything need to be done through the control knob?

Control knob.

And it's arguably worse than the Joyeauto unit in that you need to use the CarPlay interface or Siri.

No worries, I am on the same boat as you. I rarely use the glovebox so I won't mind the install. That is how I will be installing mine

Thanks for clarifying, I do need the NTG 4.0 Unit. Mine is a 2010 E 350 with the HK system and factory aux port in the glovebox. I can wait for the Next-Gen unit. I just want the best unit regardless of price because I want to 'Set it and forget it'
I don't want to have to keep fidgeting with the unit and it being unstable and a hassle.

Thank you again

There is a new firmware from Roadtop dated 20.7.16 that solves the 360/Front camera problem - I'll try to post. Now when I switch from reverse to forward the Front/360 camera activates.

-Only remaining concern is that sometimes the wireless doesn't automatically connect and I have to manually go to connect in my iPhone's bluetooth settings. No big deal.
-I do wish the left steering wheel controls could work to change tracks and scroll. But I gather that would disable the dash/speedometer controls.

Very happy with unit.

Attached is the MCU update. Thanks, bE550!

Note that it's labeled "BENZ2." I know many of us have the plain "BENZ" HW and I don't know if there are actually different HW versions, or not, but I have not been brave enough to try it on my BENZ unit.

Thank You.
I have update this version(Road Top MCU BENZ2 20.7.16 (Fixed 360 camera) on my 2014 GLK 250 Bluetec and Camera Problem is now solved.
All working well.

Only task is put it back together as i am still struggling due to tight space and not sure how to open glove box.
Looks like may require a drill a hole in order to fit everything under radio.

FWIW, I found the dash disassembly video in post #3 by searching the web by W212 (E-Class) dashboard and glove box videos. If you haven't done so yet, I'd suspect there must be some videos for your X204 (GLK) out there somewhere.

They sent me this update as well, however it did not fix my issue. Can you share your settings? My update reflected the new version in the software version page. But I’m not sure if using a 8GB affects it or not. Then instructions I got were vague and said to use a 16 or 32 formatted as FAT32. The 8GB seemed to work but I wanna rule that factor out.
I will try to re-install and try again. My issue is when I put in drive, I see the front view for a 360 split second. If I change the front view settings to add more time, I just get a longer blank screen.

I think they just mean you have to use a key that is 16 gb or less; I used 8 GB.

I had the same problem that the screen went black for a few seconds. After the update I set "Front View Time" to zero and then the system behaved as COMAND normally would: 360 stays on for a few seconds until I speed up. That being said, it did seem a little finicky the first few times. I also set Reverse Line Detect , Reverse Display Track, and Reverse Display Radar to zero.

Updated again, with the file that is uploaded on here. It looks the same exact as the one they sent me. I used a 32GB drive this time and the unit updated and rebooted fine. However, problem isn't fixed.
I don't know what is wrong with it, I think our cars should operate the same? I don't think our RoadTop units are any different either. Very strange and my settings are the same as yours.
Your earlier posts said you had version 20.7.99.17 that fixed the problem?

2013 ML350 Bluetec, 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible (sold)
Ordered one from Road Top for my 2013 ML350 Bt. I ordered one from Carsara about a month ago but the package got lost in transit. I received a refund and their customer service was top notch. The reason I ordered with Road Top (even though it was 40$ more expensive than Carsara) is that I wanted faster shipping. If you're not in a hurry and wouldn't mind waiting longer, I recommend Carsara. Their unit is the exact same as Road Top (cheaper but slower shipping). I'll keep everyone posted once I receive the unit and install it.

I double checked my setting for the 360 camera and here they are:

Make setting to Off on all three (detect, track and radar).
Restart Engine and let us know.

Thank you for checking again for me. I have tried those exact settings as well. The problem has remained. I rebooted the unit each time by holding back button as well. I also had all 3 settings to off too, none works.
Reached out to RoadTop regarding latest MCU update (7.16) not fixing my issue, they asked me to wait a few days for their engineer to attempt to fix and requested my VIN number. My fingers are crossed. I can't understand how my NTG would act differently than your guys's though...strange. I hope it isn't something with my car settings? I haven't changed anything aside from enabling AUX. Either that or my RoadTop unit is defective lol

Hey all - quick question. I pulled the trigger on the Joyeauto unit recently, but had not found time to install it. Came back to this thread to review the install instructions and see the recommendation has changed to the Road Top unit. 95Sinned and Cadetdrivr - is the improvement so great you'd recommend returning the Joye unit (I'm still within 30 days) and just picking up the Road Top?

Yup, get one of the “next-gen” units.

Road Top is one of three, and possibly more, resellers that sell otherwise apparently identical units.

Several posts back, it's listed the pro's of the newer unit, on top of my head-- simple less wiring, utilizing factory microphone and more stable/reliable software, and cheaper price. I would say to return and get the newer units.

Although the directions are pretty rough, I was able to get everything connected and had it working. Wireless android auto, wired android auto and screen mirroring all worked great BUT I didn't have any sound. A member from the c63 section informed me that the original fiber optic cable/plug needed to be removed from the OEM harness and plugged into the jumper harness that goes directly into the back of the command unit. The directions also stated that if you have the AUX option in audio menu then you shouldn't need to use the AMI plug with the 3mm jack in the armrest to get audio. Unfortunately for my car that was incorrect. The 3mm wire needed to be routed through the armrest. Once that connection was made I had audio.

I was hoping to be able to keep the box behind the command unit but after fighting with it for over 2 hours and smushing wires every which way, its just not possible. Everything was unplugged and I found a small spot in the passenger side foot-well right next to the glove-box to stick it. Its still a tight fit but it can make it in there. The glove box didn't need to come out, just drop the lower kick panel and you can find a small section that you can pass the wires through. Even with the box away from the command unit, its still a real b*tch to get the jumper harness to stay flat while you push back the command unit. The harness needs to be under the command unit, it wont fit directly behind the head unit. I have to assume the wifi antenna can be mounted anywhere in the dash and still have a full connection. I moved it around the car before sticking it inside dash and always had a full signal.

Couple notes. I'm using a Samsung S8
-Not sure about apple but android supports multiple Bluetooth devices at the same time. I am able to keep my Bluetooth connection to the vehicle itself AND the carplay unit at the same time. Seems convenient when switching back and forth between platforms if you just want to listen to the radio but still take a phone call.
-I need more time to play with this thing but I noticed that you have to connect to wifi first BEFORE bluetooth or else you cant connect to android auto. A bit annoying since everyone allows Bluetooth to connect whenever the car starts and now you have to toggle the carplay bluetooth off/on to make a connection. 1)Connect to the "carplay" wifi first. After the wifi is connected and the carplay screen is open, toggle the "carplay" bluetooth off/on. Once connected, android auto should start automatically on your phone then pop up on the command unit screen. Select it on the command screen when it pops up and your in. Wired android auto just needs to be plugged into the phone and select the WiredAuto icon. '
-You can also return to the main command screen and not lose the android auto connection.
-Screen mirroring with android only works a wired connection. Download the "Autolink" app first. Plug the phone in while on the main carplay screen and select the Autolink icon. I noticed mirroring is only allowing audio to play through the phone. Have to work on this one.

Overall I think its a great option if you want to avoid placing a new screen.
Can you share your link? The only one I can find says it only works for NTG 5
