DIY: Joyeauto Wireless CarPlay for NTG4.5/4.7

One question about your glovebox setup in the E Class, can you upload a picture of your setup? I saw that you were going to remove a black plastic piece from the glove box and fish the wires through there. I never saw the finished install unless I scrolled over it. (sorry in advanced)
Going to attempt this soon on my 2010 W212 with the NTG 4.0 Model

1. Where do you recommend that I buy the Joyeauto unit for the best pricing?
2. Can the steering wheel buttons work to change the track while using CarPlay Spotify?
Great Write-up. This has further convinced me that I need to do this to the stock head unit instead of buying the larger screen android head unit
Thank you for dedicating a lot of time to this thread not only with the write-up, but sticking around months after the fact to help troubleshoot with many different people. Almost positive you don't work for the company and you have done amazing work with this thread.

2. On the RoadTop unit, none of steering buttons work for Carplay, only the Speech button works to use "hey Siri". Of course the volume buttons still control the volume, as with the center console volume knob. The center console "Next Track" or "Previous Track" also do not control CarPlay. The way to skip to the next track is by using the Control knob and selecting the "Next" button inside the Music App, our say "hey Siri, next song" or pressing the Speech button then saying "next song".

2. On the Joyeauto unit simply move the Comand controller left/right (not rotate) to skip tracks.

Thanks!

Thanks!
Personally if I had a car with NTG 4.5/4.7 I'd go with one of the next-gen units.
The one thing ALL these units have in common is a new wiring harness that plugs into both the Comand unit and the CarPlay unit so the work involved is similar for all the options, except for the newer ones that use the MB mic so one does not have to wire a mic.
1. I'd not recommend the Joyeauto unit if you can wait a few weeks. Originally it looked like there were not "next-gen" units available for NTG 4.0 but now it looks like there are a couple potential options. Other members have ordered these units so I'd suggest waiting to hear about their experiences. I know one that was mentioned in the group buy thread still uses an external mic like the Joyeauto unit so it's internals may, or may not, be similar to the other next-gen NTG 4.5/4.7 units.

The Best of Mercedes & AMG

I don't want to have to keep fidgeting with the unit and it being unstable and a hassle.
Thank you again
-Only remaining concern is that sometimes the wireless doesn't automatically connect and I have to manually go to connect in my iPhone's bluetooth settings. No big deal.
-I do wish the left steering wheel controls could work to change tracks and scroll. But I gather that would disable the dash/speedometer controls.
Very happy with unit.

Note that it's labeled "BENZ2." I know many of us have the plain "BENZ" HW and I don't know if there are actually different HW versions, or not, but I have not been brave enough to try it on my BENZ unit.

I have update this version(Road Top MCU BENZ2 20.7.16 (Fixed 360 camera) on my 2014 GLK 250 Bluetec and Camera Problem is now solved.
All working well.
Only task is put it back together as i am still struggling due to tight space and not sure how to open glove box.
Looks like may require a drill a hole in order to fit everything under radio.

I will try to re-install and try again. My issue is when I put in drive, I see the front view for a 360 split second. If I change the front view settings to add more time, I just get a longer blank screen.

I had the same problem that the screen went black for a few seconds. After the update I set "Front View Time" to zero and then the system behaved as COMAND normally would: 360 stays on for a few seconds until I speed up. That being said, it did seem a little finicky the first few times. I also set Reverse Line Detect , Reverse Display Track, and Reverse Display Radar to zero.

I don't know what is wrong with it, I think our cars should operate the same? I don't think our RoadTop units are any different either. Very strange and my settings are the same as yours.
Your earlier posts said you had version 20.7.99.17 that fixed the problem?

Reached out to RoadTop regarding latest MCU update (7.16) not fixing my issue, they asked me to wait a few days for their engineer to attempt to fix and requested my VIN number. My fingers are crossed. I can't understand how my NTG would act differently than your guys's though...strange. I hope it isn't something with my car settings? I haven't changed anything aside from enabling AUX. Either that or my RoadTop unit is defective lol

Road Top is one of three, and possibly more, resellers that sell otherwise apparently identical units.

I was hoping to be able to keep the box behind the command unit but after fighting with it for over 2 hours and smushing wires every which way, its just not possible. Everything was unplugged and I found a small spot in the passenger side foot-well right next to the glove-box to stick it. Its still a tight fit but it can make it in there. The glove box didn't need to come out, just drop the lower kick panel and you can find a small section that you can pass the wires through. Even with the box away from the command unit, its still a real b*tch to get the jumper harness to stay flat while you push back the command unit. The harness needs to be under the command unit, it wont fit directly behind the head unit. I have to assume the wifi antenna can be mounted anywhere in the dash and still have a full connection. I moved it around the car before sticking it inside dash and always had a full signal.
Couple notes. I'm using a Samsung S8
-Not sure about apple but android supports multiple Bluetooth devices at the same time. I am able to keep my Bluetooth connection to the vehicle itself AND the carplay unit at the same time. Seems convenient when switching back and forth between platforms if you just want to listen to the radio but still take a phone call.
-I need more time to play with this thing but I noticed that you have to connect to wifi first BEFORE bluetooth or else you cant connect to android auto. A bit annoying since everyone allows Bluetooth to connect whenever the car starts and now you have to toggle the carplay bluetooth off/on to make a connection. 1)Connect to the "carplay" wifi first. After the wifi is connected and the carplay screen is open, toggle the "carplay" bluetooth off/on. Once connected, android auto should start automatically on your phone then pop up on the command unit screen. Select it on the command screen when it pops up and your in. Wired android auto just needs to be plugged into the phone and select the WiredAuto icon. '
-You can also return to the main command screen and not lose the android auto connection.
-Screen mirroring with android only works a wired connection. Download the "Autolink" app first. Plug the phone in while on the main carplay screen and select the Autolink icon. I noticed mirroring is only allowing audio to play through the phone. Have to work on this one.
Overall I think its a great option if you want to avoid placing a new screen.
