It was a well known problem for the W211 which was 2003-2009. They eventually offered an extended warranty for 15 years unlimited miles. But that doesn't extend to the W212. I'd say keep your receipt and if they ever decide to offer an extended warranty, they will reimburse you for the repair if you had to pay for it out of pocket. Or you could try call MB corporate and ask for goodwill and mention how they have the same problem on the W211 which was covered.

This is not good, not good at all. I will have to inspect my car...

Thinking further on this... I'd like to determine whether the OP is regarding a continuing(?)or expanded investigation (in 2014) of remaining W211s. My W212 wasn't manufactured for another 18 months. Not good to read about in either case...

I do not smell gas within my car.

It's only noticeable when you fill up the tank. Before it was covered and people were told that you need to replace the gas tank to fix it, they were quoted 3-4k for the job. So some people just resorted to not filling up the tank. Some people who were out of warranty fixed it by just using some RTV sealant on the tank. MB just likes to replace the entire tank including fuel pump when the problem occurs.

There is no plausible excuse for exposed fuel anywhere in the passenger compartment. Zero, Zip, Nada. Some of you clowns puff on cancer sticks for god's sake!

This is (almost) enough to convince me my next car should not be a Mercedes.

Like many auto makers, Mercedes gets parts from multiple supplier, possibly Continental which makes parts for many other car makers. It's not exclusive to MB. Also to the OP, I'd file a case with the NHTSA. You can do it online. I actually did that once on a Ford and a recall happened a bit later. Not to say that I caused it, but it was a problem that many had encountered and if enough people submit a complaint, something might happen. In that case, they actually contacted me and they even sent me a fedex tag to send them the defective part which I sent to them.

OP. You are cover under PZEV Emission warranty from MBusa for 15 year or 150k miles.

The gas leak under the rear seat is most likely a fuel cap leak and the PZEV will cover that.

First, take it to a certified Mercedes dealer and ask the service advisor during write up if your car is under PZEV which will indicate when they run your VIN, if PZEV is indicated, most likely the dealer will ask you to pay for 1 hour diagnostic fee at which time they will find this cover under the PZEV emission warranty, then they will fix the problem and waive the diagnostic fee.

I would recommend indicating the car is slow to start at low speed and hesitates during acceleration. They will check for fault code and if your exhaust manifold is bad, the manifold will be replaced as well under the PZEV warranty.

Good luck.

My guess is that the OP doesn't have a Pzev car. It wasn't very common and only a small percentage of cars out there are Pzev. But if it is, it'd be covered. Normally the dealer would tell you it was covered if it wasn't but lots of Pzev owners were told it wasn't covered by the dealer and then had to take it up with corporate before being covered when they should have been told that in the first place.

I can’t speak for other states, but here in California. You would be cover especially with the issue the OP stated.

FYI. I see allot of Mercedes that has this PZEV warranty that was covered.

obviously the OP is not going to drive around with a pull of gas in under his backseat so I would recommend taking it into a Mercedes dealer and let them run coverage because this is a known issue and it limited to 1 or 2 cases. Pay the 1 hour diagnostic fee as you will be getting it back from the dealer once it is confirmed coverage under the emissions warranty.

Best of luck.

I never knew this was an issue. No gas smell on my 2012 E350.
