Remove grill cover

The previous owner of my car (w212 2014 facelift) basically glued the Mercedes grill star emblem into its housing and it’s proving a pain to get out. I understand that to remove the grill basically the whole bumper needs to come off, but is there a way to just remove the grill cover (the emblem holder and the two slats on each side)? From the looks of it, it’s just held in by clips but was hoping to get some information on it before I go just trying to take it apart myself.

I believe it is riveted to the bumper and that means you will have to take it apart.

I should have included in original that it was a 2014 facelift model. You’re positive it’s riveted in? From the replacement grill cover photos it looks as tho it just snaps in and from looking behind it I can’t see any spots it’s attached to in any other manner.

The driver of a facelift 2016 W212 on this thread confirmed that the grille was riveted. I personally have not removed the grille on any W212.

Yes the grille is attached to the bumper. I’m referring to the plastic grille cover attached to it. Not the grille itself.

I have a 2016 facelift and I'm the one that commented on the rivets in that other thread. I replaced the entire grille but I believe you are asking about replacing only the insert with the slats and emblem housing.
I have my original grille sitting around in my garage - I'll take a look at it tonight to see how the insert is attached and I'll report back.

I got a chance to pull out the old grille this morning and yes, it is attached with snap tabs only. However, good luck undoing all those tabs while the grille is attached. Here you go

Thanks a ton. You are definitely right about how much of a pain this is going to be. The right side of it I definitely can get (very thin and can fit thru a gap in the top), but the left side is going to be a whole issue in itself.

Since you are only replacing the slats insert, do yourself a favor and drop the bumper from the get - you'll be doing yourself a huge favor. Removing the entire bumper is not difficult at all

Thanks. I’ll definitely keep that in mind if I can’t wiggle my arm behind later tonight. I just wanted to replace the Star with the illuminated one, but it honestly may not be worth it with how they glued in the last.
