One word of caution for the DIY newbies - brake fluid will react very badly with paint. Be careful not to let even a drop get on the paint of your car.

"Bleeding" is a term used to describe a procedure to remove air from the system. "Flushing" is simply replacing the system fluid.
What I've done in the past, if I couldn't active the ABS via scan tool was to perform an initial flush (M/C and calipers). Button everything up, then drive the car and slam brakes a few time to activate the ABS. Then perform a second flush of the system. Always worked for me. That said, I wouldn't lose sleep over any minute amount which may or may not flush.
What's interesting is the WIS procedure for W212 fluid replacement and bleeding are pretty much identical. Nothing stating activating ABS via STAR Diagnostics. Though the procedure is written around a commercial filling and bleeding machine which has capabilities to drain reservoir, pulse fluid to pressurize air bubbles out, etc.... with the only difference being pressing and releasing the brake pedal as pressurized fluid is pushed thru system if system has been "opened".

The power bleeder is a must have tool. I may do this service when I’m swapping out my summer/winters as I’ll have the wheels off.
Strong work on the flush. Future readers note, however, that although the power bleeder is nice, it is not at all necessary or required, and the procedure can be accomplished just the same with no other tools at all by manually pumping the brakes with a bleeder open. Just don't forget to keep topping off the reservoir.
