2015 E400 Sedan Exhaust Mods

I’m trying to amplify the exhaust sound from my e400. On cold starts it sounds amazing but soon dies down to pretty much no sound. I see the car has 2 mufflers, one resonator, and secondary cat. Should I delete the cats and resonators? Just want a bit more noise wouldn’t want too much drone. Or maybe a muffler delete only? Any help much appreciated

Is the sound level exhaust temperature related or a result of the higher cold idle RPMs? I believe it is the latter, but I haven't bothered to instrument it, yet.

a "Cold Start" runs a higher idle and runs a cam adjuster test, hence the louder exhaust note. you should hear mine...lol!

My E550 has EVERYTHING deleted and I'm running 3" MBH down-pipes with dumps(waiting on my other pipes to arrive so I can complete the system). So damn loud...TOO loud...lol

The mufflers, despite their size, actually do much less at killing the noise than the resonators do. I started by deleting the mufflers and their wasn't much difference in the noise. But, when I removed both resonators, it REALLY woke up the sound. I did not experience any droning, but my motor is different than yours, so I cannot speak to what your car will do. I would have the resonators removed and replaced with straight pipe. If you get drone, then you can have them reinstalled, but mention that when you get your system done so they can make their cuts in the most strategic places that will facilitate easier re-installment. Also, you can hear the turbos much better if you pull the resonators!

While it is definitely different during the first 30 seconds, I've watched the idle and don't think it's a significant change. The exhaust on this engine definitely sounds great for about the first 30 seconds, regardless of whether or not the ambient temp is warm or cold. If it simply a cam adjuster test, I feel like it wouldn't sound as consistent the entirety of the time. I suspect it's an adjustment to get certain components warmer more quickly for emissions purposes. Regardless, if it's harmless, it would be pretty nice if we could figure out a way to keep it that way.

E550 is V8
E400 is V6 Crappy typo

So pretty different just there in exhaust notes.

I’m planning on running either 63 or 43 mufflers with a resonator delete/h pipe with downpipes

so, what I said wasn't a guess. ""Colds Start" runs a higher idle(to help get everything warmed up faster) and runs a cam adjuster test", this is what happens. there is not much change in the RPMs as what "noise" you are hearing is the ECU changing the cam timing.

if you want you car to be louder, you can take off the resonators and keep the mufflers, or spend +$2K on an exhaust system.

actually the E500 is a V8, it's what the rest of the world calls the E550. We're talking about the E400, which IS a V6 (with twin turbos), so yes I'm aware of the inherent noise differences in the V6 vs the V8, just not the specific differences as I've never heard an E400 with exhaust.

I have a 2016 E400 sedan. I removed both resonators and did straight pipes back to the mufflers. Car sounds like **** lol.

In the Mid range it sounds like a trumpet.

I'm thinking I need to replace the mufflers, anyone have any suggestions? Would Mufflers from an AMG sound better? Or are there and other direct fit aftermarkets?

Funny you say that I just got custom catless downpipes and deleted both resonators and went straight pipe. Car sounds pretty bad. I’m gonna go h pipe or x pipe instead and find Amg mufflers

Did you feel any loss of power by deleting both resonators? I’m planning on doing muffler delete and maybe putting one resonator back in

i have a e400 sedan as well. Any clips by chance ? I was debating doing the same but if you’ve done the work I’d love to hear it if possible

Following. I have an E350 and would love a little more sound. Does anyone have a clip of resonator replaced with Xpipe while keeping stock mufflers?

Tried doing a muffler delete today and the drone was terrible so I put them back on. I’m currently running catless downpipes and both resonators deleted. Next thing I’m going to try is running either an x or h pipe instead of straight and hope it improves the tone.

I'm running a muffler and res delete with Jpipes and an Xpipe and I get a bit of drone between 1.8k and 2k. Nothing horrible, but the wife gets annoyed sometimes so I try and feather when we're in the car together unless I WOT and scare her lol. Not sure if I am going to ever change anything to quiet the bit of drone I get. Probably just live with it. I feel as my sound turned out exactly how I wanted it so a bit of drone is worth it.

Update: I'm replacing the mufflers tomorrow lol. I'll try to grab some before and after sound clips if I remember, but either way I'll let you know how it turns out.

I don't know much about J-Pipes, but isn't their purpose to tune out drone??? Are yours not adjustable like these? Just curious...

Mine are not adjustable (I've never actually seen adjustable ones before). I got some drone when I deleted the resonators and swapped it with an Xpipe. There was definitely less drone if any at all with just the Jpipes and the resonators, but the WOT and accelerating tone now is outstanding. I might toss in some sound deadening in the trunk to see if that helps or look at different resonator ideas. It doesn't bother me enough to do anything at the moment and we usually drive the wife's ML when we go on long road trips.

Im not overly thrilled with the sound from this car, but changing the mufflers definitely helped. I probably will not do the custom exhaust route again, rather get an engineered aftermarket exhaust like I usually do.

Can you link to exactly what you purchased to achieve this?
