Hi guys and girls. I have an E Klass W212 Facelift from 2014 and I would like to change the exterior looking to more sport looking car, like the E63 AMG. Is that even possible ? And if it is, do you know somebody who have done this before. Is that expensive ?

 

yes you can, but the E63 has wider front fenders, so you'll have to go with an aftermarket kit in the front. All the rear stuff(bumper, lights, etc...) will swap over.
and, not that you had to ask, but yes, it will be expensive, lol.

Both cars are 4-door sedans. The differences between the regular sedan and AMG are strictly decorative, and minor in both size and scope. If yours has the luxury grille and not a Sport Grille, you can change that without too much expense and be done with it.

That said, while driving on the street, I pass (and am passed) by other W212s all the time. From this distance (yards/meters), I cannot tell the difference between the two unless I close behind and examine the AMG badging, or lack of AMG badging. Differences in wheels sometimes help, but no one remotely has time to examine front fender width, or the presence of a different diffuser beneath the rear bumper.

Just my opinion, but there's no reason to spend money to change the subtle appearance between the two models. The vast majority of other (non MB) drivers can't tell any difference and really don't care. They only notice that you drive a Mercedes, and if it matters to you, that should be enough.

The small handful of very knowledgeable Mercedes enthusiasts are few and far between, and all they will observe is that you've tried to convert a standard sedan into a version that it isn't. Such is usually labelled as poser-ism. And I'm sure you don't want that.

If you want an AMG, step up and buy one. Otherwise, be happy with what you have, which is the envy of many other drivers.

I am an old Fuddy-Duddy. If the car I buy doesn't look the way I want, or if it doesn't have the wheels I want... I buy a different car. There are thousands of brands/models/colors to choose from.

I discarded the immature need to be "different" or "individual" many years ago. I was already individually different the day I was born, and have no need to prove it to anyone.

 

Well I still think it's cool for people to mod their cars so if you have the time and money, go for it.

 

I think the AMG front bumper, rear diffuser, and exhaust tips are fine looking. Don't badge it as an AMG and you're good.

However, I agree with the sentiment that this is a huge waste of money.

Just when i realized that, its too late.

 

I have 1 W212 in limo version, the other in sport version.
Sport version has dual exhaust and trunk wing, when I added wing to the limo.
You can always add fake exhaust tip just like you can add AMG badge.
But .... being fake doesn't cut between fellow MB owners.

 

I really appreciate all of your answers! I was also thinking that maybe it is a waste of money. But recently I scratched a bit the front bumper and I was wondering if this was an opportunity to change the way it looks.

I agree 5,00%. Brought my C55 AMG to near CLK 63 BlackSeries specs (all but the engine), had a car that was fun to drive, more expensive than a fully loaded C63 AMG, that no one wanted or would accept as a trade-in when it came time to move on. Ended up selling my nearly new CLK 63 steering rack to a crazed young enthusiast at cost with a free C55 attached.

 

Sometimes a change of wheels or a small accent like a roof spoiler can really be a big difference. It's your car, don't be afraid to spend your money however you want, so long as you're comfortable with the decision. I've modified every single car I've owned(except one) and haven't regretted a penny.

 

I wouldn't listen to the above posts. It's your car and if you don't have the money to buy an AMG (probably why most of us don't in the first place so please stop with the "man up and buy an AMG" bull****), then modding your car for lets say $2,000 - $3,000 isn't so bad if you're planning on keeping it in the long run. Change out the wheels, lower it a little if you'd like (I would if you get bigger wheels), get an aftermarket AMG Quad tips, trunk lip from JPSeed (where I got mine, it's excellent quality for cheap and already painted), and get a front bumper kit (you don't have to get wider fenders if you buy an aftermarket E63 kit).

Its your car so you do what you want with it. But everything I listed above will cost you roughly $3,000 maybe 3500 with paint. if it's something you desire, go for it. If not, keep it stock and just tint the windows and get the AMG quad tips and trunk spoiler it'll look badass just with those.

 

I've probably spent about 5.5k on mods to my car. At the time of purchase, the price of my car + 5.5k would not have gotten me even close to buying a same model year E63 AMG, I would've needed another 15k-20k. Making due with what I had was more or less my only option and I don't regret spending what I did on my car.

 

Exactly. Maybe you could've got an older AMG with more miles that was more than likely beat on, but people also don't realize that those cars are way more expensive to fix and to maintain.

It's better to make it "look" like an E63 for 5 G's and have lower maintenance costs and headaches than it is to buy one for 15-20 G's more and have to deal with a $5,000+ brake replacement.

I thank you guys for your reply. It’s true, I don’t have the money to buy an E63 neather to maintain it. I don’t want to change at all the engine specs, just the exterior looking. I would not badge it cuz I really want to keep it clean black. I was wondering how much it cost, but I saw that you sad around 3-4 k then it’s not that much knowing that i would never recover that amount of money. And I have to mention to that I grew up in the Need for Speed era and I am to addicted to tunning. Haha.

I think you are mistaking modding for butchering.
Being fake gets applause only from certain people. Don't bet everybody will like it.
Coming to actuall modding, the only think I do to my MB are wheels changes (I add rear wing to cover ding on the trunk).
Choice of wheels comes to personal taste again, but having classic monoblocks on my MB turn more than 1 head and more than 2.
Bottom line, keep your MB clean and keep it classic and you will get applause.

Just a bunch of old guys on here who kinda know better. I've thought about modding my car in the past, nothing crazy, just a better set of factory rims. Would have cost me around 1k at the time. Got rid of the car a few years later. Never regretted not spending the money and it was nice having an extra 1k in the bank. Maybe that's how I can afford a Mercedes now, don't waste money on mods that you never get back when you sell. It actually depresses the sale price because enthusiast tends to mean beat on, that's why everyone looks for the stock car driven by the little old lady who just went to church in it.

But money is one of those things that you can spend however you like and do whatever you like to make you happy. I just think it's better to save it up and spend it on a nicer car than to waste it on mods. I see some 10-15 year old cars that are heavily modded and I think they could have skipped all that and just bought a newer car with the money.

 

Just to be clear, I am NOT AGAINST modding a car. I have added a trunk spoiler to my car, along with modest, tasteful "Sport" badging and a couple other embellishments, to include an MBWorld sticker in the rear window and a cartoon character decal next to my license plate. That pleases me, and what you do with your car pleases you as well. But that should be the only reason for it...

My comments are for those who think their efforts to transform the car with extensive changes (at considerable expense) will be something that the average Joe will appreciate. One can buy an '86 Pontiac Fiero and slap an aftermarket Ferrari body kit on it, and that will make a huge appearance change. My point is that the inter-model modding that I see here is not graphically visible enough to be noticeable. Noticeable to you, because you made the changes, of course. But ask me to pick you out in traffic as something "different" just isn't going to happen.

I have my own "White Star Flat Badge" serial number 001 (of 700 sold worldwide) on the hood of my car. Big Whoop, as no one notices it, and that's fine with me.

My son once put a fist through a wall in my home, which I dutifully patched up. When it came time to sell the home, my wife said the patch will put off buyers. I told her, "You know the patch is there, but buyers will not." House sold just the way it was presented, wall patch and all. I wager to this day the buyer still hasn't found the patch. This is what I mean by modding a car hoping people will notice.

I've seen pics of a bumper-to-bumper chromed SLS-AMG on these forums. Now that is a mod that gets attention... an under-bumper diffuser, not so much. So unless you turn your W212 sedan into a 2-door convertible Maserati or some such, no one will notice.
