(Video) 722.9 Change Automotive Transmission Fluid and Filter For W212(M276) During C

722.9 automatic transmission is very popular in Mercedes-Benz and served from 2006-2017. It has 7 forward gears and 2 reverse gears. Every 7 years/70,000 miles (made after 06-22-2010) or 4 years/40,000 miles (made before 06-22-2010) we have to change the automatic transmission fluid and filter of our Mercedes, that's requiring of Mercedes maintenance booklet. If your vehicle was equipped 722.9, that’s the most same process to change ATF and filter like this video, whatever made before or after 06-22-2010. For this vehicle (W212M276), the drain plug of the torque converter is difficult to operate, so I drill a hole on the shell to working easily. Something won’t happen on my W221M278. Another notice, if your vehicle made before 06-22-2010, the fluid is red and overflow plug is withe, otherwise the fluid is blue and the overflow plug is green. Just like other maintenance, change ATF is not a difficult job, just be patient. Good luck!

Here is the video:

Thanks for the great video. I'm just waiting for another tool to arrive and I'll be doing the same thing. Most difficult part, I believe, will be getting the car on blocks up high enough, and as level as possible, to work under without being too cramped. And I'll be flushing the torque convertor and trans cooler as well. I have found posts saying threat my 2016 E350 Base does NOT have a convertor plug. I'll know for sure soon enough.

Thanks for the wonderful writeup! When I changed my fluid, I ran into the same offset torque converter drain plug as you did. I didn't think of doing what you did to drill an access hole into the bell housing. Absolutely GENIUS!!!

So I wound up having to drain and refill the trans twice using 5 liters each time to try to dilute the torque converter fluid.

Your method gets it all the first time!

I've enjoyed all your videos, great stuff!!

Thanks,

Bob

What a beautiful video! So clear and so easy to see and follow every step!

And as my late father would say, "the job isn't done until all the tools are cleaned and put away" ... :-)

I'm so happy you like the video ❤️, and let me pay my respect and salute to your father! The same word was said as my dad. That's the inheritance.

If you need help let me know. I can pull out the ATF changing guide from WIS of MB by your VIN.
I just know if the 722.9 has replaced the trans oil cooler, that'd be different from correcting the oil level without a trans oil cooler. Bring the oil temp to 90C/194F to let the thermostat opens and then cool down to 45C/113F to correct the oil level.

Thanks for the reply. My VIN# is WDDHF5KB9GB203261. I'd appreciate any additional information you have that would apply to my particular vehicle.

I thought the maintenance interval for the post 2010 722.9 is 60,000 miles. That is what my maintenance manual says for my 2016 E350.

I just pull out all 6 documents of the guide. Your E350 is the same chassis number with mine, both are 212.059. There is no transmission oil cooler equipped, just a cooling line get cooling from the radiator. But you have the start/stop function, so you have to perform one more step to remove the "auxiliary oil pump for automatic transmission" before draining the torque convertor. I uploaded the documents on https://en.leighsr.com/mb-7g-atf-change-w212, you might download them from the website.

There are two intervals of ATF change for 722.9, 40k miles (4 years) if the vehicle manufactured before 06-18-2010; Or 70k miles (7 years) if the vehicle manufactured after 06-21-2010. More detail

My maintenance manual pretty clearly states 6/60 for fluid changes:

Sorry for my reckless reply I just checked your vehicle's maintenance schedule, you are right. But I am confused why MB short the interval of replacing such of long lifespan consumable parts.
The spark plugs from 60k miles to 50k miles; The ATF from 70k miles to 60k miles; the fuel filter and coolant from 150k miles to 120k miles.

the link is not working? I have a 14 E350 and have 1200 miles to this service. I have subscribed to your channel. Have a couple questions tho. Where did you get the piece that screws into pan to attach the clear hose from pump? Also where did you get the obd II scanner or the item you used to plug into obd II port and also the diagnostic software that lets you see transmission temp?

thanks

brad

My bad, I just re-identify the address to https://en.leighsr.com/mb-7g-atf-change-w212 Sorry for that.
1, For the MB 722.9 ATF filler adapter:https://amzn.to/3ge9lAt
2, I bought the MB star SD connect C4 from here:https://ebay.to/2NlYWWO, all of the software and guides are in the diagnostic computer.

After some research, I ensure you can following the guides post on https://en.leighsr.com/mb-7g-atf-change-w212, your W212.088 has the start/stop function, so you have to disconnect the auxiliary oil pump before draining from the torque converter.
Just beware, by your model of AT 722.96, there is a pre-filling ATF approx. 0.7 liter from the other filling hole of AT case if you just repaired your AT. If only maintenance, no necessary pre-fill.

Thanks. No repair, just the normal maintenance. Do they make some sort of tool to get to the torque convertor nut/bolt without having to drill that anyone knows of?

I shortened the interval even much more
2 years or 20,000KM is my go to number now because this is equal to 800 hours of engine/trans running if 20,000 KM achieved.
I reset engine hours per 5,000KM oil change and I been getting 200 hours from the last 5,000Km twice.
1st trans oil change was 10,773KM on 15 Aug 2018, but 4 years of oil age coz car is 2014 model.
Damn, gearbox suddenly became much more responsive. I kid you not.

However, the 1st oil change I did not get to remove the oil in the torque converter due to start-stop trans oil pump blocking the drain hole.
This 14th Aug 2020 is the 2 years and estimated maximum 23,500KM. So 13,000KM ish I get for 2 years oil life.
Today 30th May 2020 mileage is at 22,150 KM.
