Question Lane Keeping Assist at various Sun angles?

Lane Keeping Assist reads the lines on the road ahead using the camera in the upper windshield in front of the inside rear view mirror. I like this feature and appreciate how it works, once one gets accustomed to it.

This morning at 10:30am, I was driving South on the Interstate and noticed that Lane Keeping Assist was not working. I also noticed the Sun was almost directly in front of me at a low angle. In this position, I could not readily see the lane lines on the road for the Sun's glare. I couldn't see my HUD readouts either, due to the glare.

I suspect the LKA camera was having the same problem as there was little to no contrast between the lines and the road. So LKA function was very limited. (i.e., the Steering Wheel shake was absent.)

The minute I turned West on another Interstate, LKA resumed working because the Sun was to the Left, and contrast on the road between the lines and roadway were now easily visible.

I reasoned that this behavior was normal... If I can't see the lines on the road due to Sun glare, why would the LKA camera do any better? Has anyone else noticed this?

I keep LKA switched off now, but I did use it for the first few months and I always kept in on in my 2014 W204 and it never had trouble reading the lines even if I was having difficulty. But I suspect your hypothesis is correct as it would've certainly warned you if there was something wrong.. car has a warning for everything, after all.

Must be in your state they keep the lanes in good condition.
In Las Vegas they are wear out as well as the walls on overhead freeway passes have tons on tire marks.
The system is a bit annoying to me, so I am not paying attention to it too much. It acts when I am on merging lane and the painted line ends.
Than with wear out lines, it is not working, but maybe that is due to light like you experienced? Good you posted it, so I will pay attention next time.

As mentioned, I first noticed this just this morning. The previous 2-1/2 years the system has worked perfectly, or I just didn't notice the change when the sun is in front. Maybe I'm just concentrating more coping with the glare rather than noticing the steering wheel shake.

I-35 through Dallas has been in construction/reconstruction and widening mode for 7 years now, and many of the lane lines are gone due to shunting traffic to temporary lanes and back. The Bots-Dots remain in place mostly, but these are gone in some sections, too.

I don't know how it's even functional at all in Vegas. Granted, I've not spent much time away from the tourist trap areas but do they even use lines? Seems like only reflectors around the strip.. don't know how the Benz would handle that.

I have not noticed this behavior before, but I generally stay in my lane unless drinking heavily.

Yes, I have noticed this also. The angle of the Sun and the glare it causes washes out the contrast the camera needs to recognize the white line.

Happens frequently on my street in both cars, especially now with the early sundown, the lines on my street are diligently maintained.

i have noticed this in my car. In heavy freezing rain at night with oncoming traffic on a 2 lane highway, the LKA conks out. It was tough for me to make out the lines so I reasoned that maybe the issue with cameras as well. However, when I cleaned out the camera, it started working well.
