2013 E550 rattle in steering

My E550 started making a rattling noise when driving, and when stopped will make the noise when turning the steering wheel. I had a local M-B indy check it. They felt that it was coming from the steering rack. The car has gone 59 thousand. I have an appointment on the 22nd with the dealer to have them check it out. Naturally, the CPO warranty expired last July. Has anybody experienced something similar? What was the outcome. My local indy didn't feel comfortable making a recommendation.

Did you receive a steering bolt recall campaign notice from Mercedes?

No, I never received a recall letter on this. Ironically, the car was at the Dealership for almost a month at the time for motor mount replacement. When I had the car checked by my Indy, they checked the bolts on the rack for tightness, and noticed that there were wrench marks on the bolts (from the engine mount repair).

My local (164 miles away) dealer got the car Monday, and diagnosed a failed front lower camber arm. ETA for the part is Friday. I guess that I'll have check out the Head-Up Display, and Adaptive Headlights on the 2021 GLC 300 4Matic loaner while I wait.

If you haven't gotten the recall I'd ask them to do it. You get an alignment out of it so it may save you that cost at least - plus you will get the new bolts.

And grease! I just got this recall work done about 2 months ago. Although I did not notice any rattling prior.

I picked up the car from the dealer a few days ago, The noise is gone. Now its time for 4 new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires from Costco, and a wheel alignment on Tuesday from a local shop.

If they replaced a part in the suspension didn’t they include alignment as part of the job? Very odd if they did not?

When the motor mounts were replaced a little over a year ago, the dealership did a wheel alignment. The LF required offset camber adjusting bolts, and the LR was a little over 1/2 degree out of spec. My service advisor stated that they couldn't do anything about it, as M-B doesn't have offset bolts on the rear wheels. Anyway it's going for a wheel alignment at a local shop used by my indy on Tuesday with new tires. The dealership wanted almost $1600 for MO tires, and alignment. I'm saving over $600, which would come close to having offset rear camber bots installed locally, if necessary.

Rear toe and camber should be adjustable from the factory... at least both our 2011 do.

Apparently on mine there isn't enough adjustment to bring the camber into spec on the LR. According to the printout on the alignment all three other wheels were brought into spec.

i wonder if something is tweaked. a body shop could put it on a frame alignment stand and check that all the suspension pivot parts are in spec..

Mercedes has funny alignment specs which are related to "ride height"... so having measured the ride height correctly is important. However, the car may also need to be within a certain range of ride heights as well.

There was member recently posting about his alignment being "off" at first and later corrected after having the springs replaced, front I believe. If the car has airmatic, then that brings up similar concerns, but the ride height can be set with MB Star Diag tools as well.

It could also be damage to the suspension components, subframe and/or body which have affected the alignment... if your not the original owner or know all the history.

Also depending on how far "out" it was, I would try to bring the other side to the same value if possible... barring fixing any issues. With rear camber, the lower control arm has slots for adjustment... long ones at that. I could see how it wasn't designed, nor would take a "crash" or adjustable bolt. I think it would require an aftermarket control arm with built-in adjustment.

I was rear ended in Dec. 2018. The only exterior body parts replaced were the deck lid, and trim. The frame crossmember with the trunk lock was replaced along with the floor of the tire well. The taillights were undamaged. Before any bodywork was done the car was put on a frame machine, and was within specs. I had the work done at a M-B certified shop. Before I bought the car as a CPO in Oct. 2016, it had a clean car-fax. That said the Left headlight shows no signs of the inverted V in the lens cover like the Right side does. That along with the LF requiring offset camber adjusting bolts, and the LR being out of spec might make one think that the car had a out of pocket collision repair done on the left side of the car. When I first got the car it went back to the dealer to get the nose aligned properly. Two weeks later, and a few front bumper cover mounting brackets, the plastic piece that the air induction hoses was broken, and replaced. So much for the "extensive" check list done to CPO the car.
