Rear View Mirror not dimming

Hey guys! After driving home tonight I noticed that my rear view mirror is not dimming, only the driver’s side. The reading lights and the ambient lights are both working, what can be the problem?

Are the center mirror and passenger side mirror dimming properly? Are all mirrors clear and bright in the daytime? Any codes?

Is the light sensor on the center rear view mirror clean? Is there anything in the back window that would stop the sensor from being able to see light from cars behind you?
Codes... a good scanner will likely give you codes.

I don’t have a code reader unfortunately :/
and no the mirror and back window are both clean, and like I said the driver’s side mirror was working perfectly, it dimmed when there were cars behind me, but the center mirror didn’t

The passenger side door mirror is not autodimming in my W212.

The driver mirror dimming normally means no sensor issue since, IIRC, they both use the same sensor.

Interesting. Never heard of this happening before. No sign of leaking fluid, right?

You can disable the dimming feature from one of the buttons on the mirror but I would think it would disable both the inside and outside mirrors but I’m not sure.

The dimming function just broke on that inside mirror? It is an electrical “gizmo”.

Arrie, I've read through both the standard and digital manuals, and I can't find the notes about disabling the antiglare feature using one of those buttons. All three buttons appear dedicated to use of the Homelink garage door integration.

I'm not saying antiglare can't be disabled, because page 122 (digital manual) shows the center mirror with a lever to manually redirect the mirror. But for cars with the automatic antiglare mirrors, the lever disappears and the manuals don't show how to disable antiglare at all. If this is a true "secret sauce" easter egg, can you enlighten us please on how to do it?

This is what the digital manual says about the antiglare mirrors (Page 124). The basic owner's manual has no information and refers the reader to the digital manual...

Automatic anti-glare mirrors
"The rear-view mirror and the exterior mirror
on the driver's side automatically go into antiglare
mode if the following conditions are met
simultaneously:
1- the ignition is switched on and
2-incident light from headlamps strikes the
sensor in the rear-view mirror.
The mirrors do not go into anti-glare mode if
reverse gear is engaged or if the interior
lighting is switched on."

Yeah I have not had any way to disable it in any of my Mercedes cars that I'm aware of. All of my other cars from different brands had power buttons for it.

Could be internal sensor requiring mirror replacement but you can check connector/pins @ overhead control panel for precaution.

In post #10, there is no mention of passenger side mirror in the manual.. so it definitely doesn't dim.

You are right, I'm wrong. I could have sworn I can turn the dimming off from a button but this is not the case. I remember now turning it off with my thumb on the sensor. What threw me off was that I drove a rental car a few weeks ago that did have a button for it and I mixed it with the compass button on my mirror.

But you can turn it OFF by turning the cabin lights ON... but who would like to drive like that in the dark...

Passenger mirror doesn’t dim on either of our ‘11s... it’s easy to spot the dimming area if you look closely at the mirror. There’s a clear edge around the perimeter and a slightly tinted or different shade within, even with dimming not activated.

I am adding folding mirrors and have been checking my mirror functionality to be sure I get the right mirror frame. The only way I was able to get mine to work in order to test it was to start the car in the dark and then shine a flashlight at the inside mirror after moving the car to drive. It definitely got darker. Then you can toggle between reverse and drive to see the difference.
