Rough Idle and Turn Off

Had an interesting issue occur today after some spirited mountain driving in my 2011 E550. I started the car after it sitting for about 20 minutes and it revved up to 1500-2000 rpms a few times before settling at the normal idle spot of 6-800. Weird, but it drove fine for the short trip to the restaurant. After lunch I started it up, it revved to around 1500 rpms, then turned off. Anyone have an idea what may have caused this? Car has 106k on it, spark plugs changed about 800 miles ago.

I would start with crank position sensor. I know there will be posts you need to scan it and that would not hurt at all but the fact is the car is 10+ years old and these things go bad. And if it reads wrong you don’t necessarily get a fault code for that. This sensor is the one reading the engine speed.

BTW, you say the engine speed was changing. Did you actually hear the engine speed changing like that or was it just what you saw in the gauge? If it was only gauge and engine did something else it is near 100% your crank sensor is bad.

I did hear/feel the engine speed revving up in conjunction with the tachometer.

So I started replacing the crank position sensor, and I'm having a hell of a time with the electrical connector. Does anyone know the trick to getting it off, I feel like I've done everything.

Pull the off-white/grey lock out a LITTLE (down and right in the picture)... then press the lock in towards connector body (down and left in picture) and pull out of CPS

I can’t for the life of me get that lock to budge, even got a little flathead in there to help and nothing. Might be time to throw in the towel and bring it to the shop.

I messed with it some more and finally got it off with a pocket flathead. That little white lock ended up going flying and getting stuck in the under tray of the car, so I had to jack it up and fish it out. We're done though, that was defiantly a PITA!
