E550 rear end play

Hi,
My wife's e550 has a issue, when the car hits a decent size pothole and over some humps, not all, the backend with loosely
sway to the left(i think). Anyways, per advice from here, i did get a 4 wheel alignment, same problem seems its abit more noticeable now. I was
thinking of replacing the rear shocks and rear subframe mounts. of course the latter of the two is way cheaper, so was wondering
has anyone replaced the mounts? and any advice? which one or both fixed it for you?, thanks

anthony

It being an E550 you have Airmatic, right? If so, see if the problem is the same between Comfort and Sport suspension settings.

I have not experienced what you explain but it sounds like you need new shocks.

My son who is a nissan tech told me the same thing. You guys very may indeed be correct and deep in my heart i believe it too. I guess
the price of a pair of shocks coming out to $1100. bucks, is what frightens me the most. but after doing some research here led me to be-
lieve that it may possibly be the subframe mounts also, but i haven't found anyone who has had this problem and what they replaced to cure it.

Logically, even though the car is not dropped on either rear side is because the airbags are still in good operation. having said that, the shocks
when they get any lateral movement, with blown shocks obiviously it swings to either direction on the rear end, because the shocks ability to
dampen the sudden changes of weight is not there(pressurized gas)is absent.. dang, better put in a pair on order at fcp...

Try them out, last I looked the shocks were $450/ea and their shipping is reasonable. Order a decent amount of OE parts from them as prices are competitive and no sales tax for me in CT.

I've usually buy from fcp euro, i take it those guys are genuine mercedes dealership?
fcp is a $105 more each, but with lifetime warranty vs reg. 12 months on oe,
either way i may have to do either one.. she only drives the car only about 900
miles a year or less..

Yes, a real dealership. Sure, if you keep the car another 10 years. Then you can exchange with FCP for the added cost.

Which ones? I’m not aware of shocks they sell… struts with airbags, yes.

Have you been under the car and taken a look? Could be struts/bags, mounts, could be a lot of things. Any evidence of leakage? Rear-ends are standard Mercedes 5-link. Did you pry around and check linkage and control arm bushing play/resilience? My money is on strut bushings (not the airbag struts, Mercedes terminology is "strut" for what we would normally refer to as control arm). You've got five on each side in the rear, that's a whole lot of bushings and ball joints to check.

Well damn... that's a good find. Those must be new offering, because I didn't see those before. I've used them for the rear air springs on both my E550 and E350 wagon. I'll need struts and shocks for my E550 soon.

Arnott has a good reputation, I don't think there's first hand experience with these particular rear shocks. Similar tech to the ADS struts, so I suspect they'll be good.

*edit*

Spoke too soon, those are a "new" offering which they have for the struts as well. You'll lose the Sport/Comfort "active" damping and have a fixed damping rate. Upside, its a new part and not remanufactured.
