Rural MB owners

I noticed an abnormal amount of soot collecting on the rear of my car in the past few months. The performance of this 550 seemed to be suffering in conjunction. No check engine light for the duration. Soot indicates to me that there is unburnt fuel leaving the car. Fuel, air, spark. I have no way of checking fuel pressure on this car, nor do I have the time to pull plugs. So I pulled the air filters. Drivers side had a nice nest of engine insulation from my E500 parked next to the 550. Covered more than 3/4 of the filter area. Passenger side was clean. Replaced the filters and bobs your uncle. Power as I remembered it came back within 10 to 15 miles of driving. I suspect fuel/air compensation was recalibrated.

Have not seen the air intake for the E550 myself, but from some pictures, it seems MB did not include the metallic screen to prevent larger objects (like mice) from entering. That is probably why your guests did not pick on the E500 (which it should have the metallic screen).
Perhaps retrofitting a screen on both intakes would prevent it from happening again.

Glad you were able to solve it easily.

Same here, thankfully they didn't chew any wires or cause any permanent damage. Does your E sit outside for an extended period? How quick did they get in there?

Also... hi from CT!

Howdy all Connecians!

I've been in this house for almost 1 year. Lots of land and detached garage. Doesn't matter where I park. They are everywhere but in the house...where the coon cat is. They seem to only be attracted to the air boxes as I found no other evidence of infiltration. Under the cowls is clean. The 500 had rodent flack everywhere but the air boxes. I have some free time at the end of next month and I will build something like a rodent strip club many feet away. I may just build screens....don't think I can get a permit for the club in a timely manner....as this is Connecticut.

One of the reasons I try and garage all of my vehicles. Large or extra garages are a major requirement when I'm looking at a house. I'm actually moving into a place that has enough under roof storage for about 7 cars. The garage(s) footprint are probably equal to the total square footage of the extremely dated house. Good priorities, huh? Lol.

Country living! I went out to my lawn shed a couple weeks ago and fired up my lawnmower only to watch a mouse and three babies come scurrying out of my engine shroud. Disconcerting... Then spent two hours cleaning the nest out with a coat hanger.

I’ve heard you can put dryer sheets around the vehicle and the engine bay, but no clue if they work.

Probably TMI, but I occasionally have a recurring dream of a "Retirement Pt.2" home on a hill, with an attached garage with capacity for 6-8 cars, to include fully paved firehouse drive through (powered garage doors on opposite sides).

My sister-In-Law lives in a 1950's single story home in the St. Louis area. She has one among 2 or 3, two car garages in her subdiv, and it has enough room in front of the two cars for a refrigerator and standalone freezer, washer and drier, and left-over room for 2 large motorcyles. Enough room to park F350 duelly P/U trucks with room to spare. Wow!

Mine is certainly nothing fancy, certainly not like that classic 1980s poster every kid had that said something like "the justification for higher education" (found a link: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthoped...ion-1838829669 ) . More like a dated 1970s home in a rural area where the owner must have had a love for cars, or tractors or something.

Now that's funny! I have one also {Wife} When we moved 23 years ago, I went from a 24x48 detached to a standard attached 2 1/2 car, that was really hard and most of my tools are in the basement! Garage is heated and I have hot water, but so was the old one I do have a 12x12 shed with power, but it is 400 feet from the house and the toolbox. House square footage doubled so the wife has plenty of room, still she asks when we will get rid of the tools in the basement! she wants that space too!

That was my dream when I was building new house in California.
But the local codes gave me 400 sq-ft garage allowance and the additional 60 sq I add come from house footage allowance.
House size was higher priority than garage size. That is why driving California residential streets you have rows of cars on both sides of the street and you have to observe your side mirrors from scratching.
The picture is totally different in Las Vegas. Each house is having min 3 car garage, lot of bigger houses have 5 car garage.
The house I bought has 960 garage, what fits my extended Sprinter as well.
Additionally I have about 3000 sq od paved driveways, so the 40' wide street has no cars park on it, unless gardeners come. I live in zoning with custom-build houses thought,
One of the houses in the neighborhood, who I was observing has 1700 sq-ft basement on top of 5-car garages. It sold before I had cash in hand, but each time I walk by it, I drool.

I put dryer sheets in there a while ago. I would often recommend this when I was a service advisor. Since the ducts are right up front I surmise the sheets aren't effective for the air boxes. Worked so far for the internal engine bay. In comparison there are no sheets in the 500 bay and there's rodent evidence everywhere.

I guess I'll try and mouse-proof the garage this winter.

Mix up a squirt bottle with DEET. One of those small bottles of concentrate from a camping store will do fine. Soak anything you don't want them near and let it dry. Good for 30 days or more. Keeps fire ants and fruit rats out of your homes air conditioner and pool equipment equipment also.

I'm rural also, and mice are a problem. I've tried (almost) every suggestion - dryer sheets, peppermint, etc, etc. The only thing that works for me are traps. A cat would work too, but I don't think it would work out with our dogs.

I find those noise maker things we humans and dogs cannot hear work... or well seem to be working as I do not have mice inside barn
Keep water and food out as best you can.
seal up outside with mice proof things.... which is not insulation

My cat = worthless so I do not reccommend this as you could get a dud....now if you want feral cats then there you go... but then you have to get big dogs to solve your feral cat problem...
Then you have to get wild hogs to take care of your dog problem... and so on.

NOW the hawks and eagles outside they are dayum good hunters. amazing to watch.

Update....found a nest in my spare tire well where there was some old napkins. They were using that as the bathroom and bringing paper up to my glove box for their "vacation" home.

I did a little research, took a piece of tape and rubbed the cat with it (the animal). Put the tape in the glove box. Sprayed wasp & hornet killer in the floor of the spare well and wiped it clean. There have been no mice that i can tell anywhere.

Fyi....the wasp & hornet spray odor smells more like new car scent than any actual "new car" scent ive ever purchased. Its a faint odor.
