Transmission

On a few occasions when I started my car (2012 W212 E350 4matic), from parked position it would not select/engage any gear (D, R or N). I then have to turn off the engine, remove the key and restart before drive gear is selected.
Has anyone ever encounter such issue? If so could you please shed some light. I hoping this is not a huge transmission problem.

Kind regards
Dee'

Check the auxiliary battery. It is responsible for powering the shifting of the vehicle into gear.

Gear shift...

Chances are it's just your gear selector module (ISM) that is coming to be due for repair. An easy job given the replacement unit is available in stock.

Try to park on flat road and not hills to lessen efforts to shift out of Park.

ISM control unit

What's your current mileage??

#1 scan for codes... could be as simple as low battery voltage during a start causing messing with the CAN and messing with drive authorization between modules. Could be the ISM as well.... start with codes.

I had the same thing happening on my 2013 E550. With the car having been in service for over 7 years, and almost 8 years since the car was built. A new main battery solved all my issues. The first thing that got my attention after replacing the battery was seeing the back up camera displayed on the COMAND screen.

I never really looked at the screen a lot when backing the car up. The old battery when first started must have had low voltage, that caused the back up camera, and not being able to shift out of park when first started. No problems for almost 18 months since I replaced the original main battery.

with such low mileage, your ISM is likely not seasoned yet.

Try floating your batteries more often
or get a new main if you think it's shot.

I try not to always tie everything back to my favorite interest of system disruption. Benz may have well reproduced with computers what British had perfected with legendary electricals!
