Is battery registration needed?

I own a 2013 E350 with the original main battery and when the time comes to replace it, do I need to register the battery through a reset process like BMW's
for the proper charge rate? The comments I've seen requiring it seem to be newer or different models. (I'd figure if MB does one model, they would do all and maybe this applies only
to newer vehicles).

In addition, I've also seen comments on the need to apply external power as well as no need to. Is this really necessary?

Thanks.

You might want to read an earlier thread on this topic for background, but short answer is no. https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...eded-w212.html

BTW, if you have a 2013 on its original battery, congratulations. Eight years is by far the longest battery life on any W212 I've read about here. Normally, for a MB-OEM battery it's three years, 4 at max.

Thanks, I'll check that thread.
Knock on wood, over the years I've been lucky with all my vehicles batteries for the most part; usually exceeding at least 5yrs. My first Tacoma battery lasted 12yrs
and was dead the day I was selling it with 225k. Had to run and get a new one before the buyer showed up lol.

No and No. At worst you'll need to re-initialize windows and sun/pano roof.

my 2006 SLK280 was totaled on 2015 with 91K miles,
my 2011 E350 was totaled this March with 93k miles,
both of them are still running with their original battery.

I think the location (climate) play a big role on battery life, and I always hook them up on my CTEK whenever I'm away on trip.

The main difference in battery life is "smart charging" or lack of it.
In W212 it come with facelift in 2014 (?)
I had batteries in older vehicles lasting up to 13 years and that in hot CA and Las Vegas. But the smart charging seem to shorten battery life and 3 years seem to be pretty common.
I just replaced the battery on our W212 who was 2 years and 11 months old. Lucked it failed 1 month before warranty expiration.
My 2014 model doesn't require any resetting after battery disconnect. It even remembers garage opener codes.

On edge of getting new battery for my 2010 E 350. First two OEM's lasted four years almost to the day and then died. Current OEM will be four years old in December. Local independent garage (highly rated) from whom I purchase tires can get an Interstate which ranks 4th after Optima, AC Delco and Exide on recommended site for top five batteries for M-B. He can get others, but will cost more as he would have to go to an auto parts store with which he does not have a relationship.

Most likely Interstate is about $300 battery and labor, but is almost 3" longer than the OEM. I checked the battery tray and it appears to have an extra few inches in the tray that OEM is not using. Height and width are OK.
One concern is losing information in the system when they pull the old battery. He says they have not had problems in past. Really do not want to lose what I have downloaded into Music Register (Over 1,000 tracks).

my favorite battery maker is East Penn, who brands their batteries Deka and Intimidator, and also makes a number of store brands.. The Intimidator AGM H6/Group 48 model 9A48 is a good match to these cars.

my LEAST favorite battery maker is Exide, who mostly makes 'store brand' batteries, and has a long and sordid history of cheating on lead pollution, bribery, labor violations, etc.

re: sizes, these cars take two sizes, H6 aka Group 48, and H8 aka Group 49. the H8/49 batts are longer, and are used on diesel cars. they can be used on gas cars too, but I see little advantage of doing so.

Dynamic "registration"....

my 2013 OEM battery... going strong👍

Batt. sensor:
The battery sensor shown above holds part of the battery tests. When it looses power, a full set of battery evaluation is triggered by it through the ECU control of ALT.

New battery for free:
You can use that to your advantage!
1- Charge your battery to induce low internal resistance
2- Unplug/replug Hyundai sensor as "reset"!
3- Go for a Hwy drive with Engineering IC display.

ECO batt sampling :
ECO has a distinct calibration cycle that simulates an "engine off" condition while driving. This is to test if the battery is able to supply the whole electric load without any engine help. Once that test by ECU is complete, normal charging (14.9v > 14.4v > 13.7v > 12.6v) is automatically resumed.

Workaround for trouble cars:
- If steady charging is not resumed, you're staring at battery problem and chances of Xmas 🎄
- When the main computers are working well there are NO extreme yo-yo swings (12.0 > 14.9 > 12.3 > 14.9...)
- Do NOT drive with low voltages!
- To safely bypass this chaos, simply use the Headlights_ON trick to command 13.5V Min.

promised land of working systems 👍

OUTCOME:
- A functional charge control is very smooth and results in gentle low currents. It does get the battery 100% charged up then floated.
- The ALT always powers the car while driving so that battery has no contribution.
- No more killer 80Amps through toasty V19 PreFuse.
- Starter cranks are short... like one single crankshaft revolution.
- This taylored charging by Bosch means our Benz battery can last significantly longer based on use with or without ECO.

..

You have prelifted W212, so I don't know if the car will keep the settings, but you can check if you Music Register has some kind of backup. Those days you never know. I have swimming poll water pump with digital control, who has a condenser, or something that will keep the time for several hr of power shortage.
Either way, what I did on W210 who would loose the memory - having 2 cars in the garage, I run jump cable between them and then could remove the battery without loosing power in the car. Just careful with moving positive battery clamp.
Lately I bought advanced charger who has "SUPPLY" mode, who would do the same job.
