They do have those little bits at the back of the star that's supposed to hold it in. I think that's how mine broke off, those little bits broke off during handling. Doesn't take much to snap them off. Then it's just glue to hold it in again.

Problem is this melt end of the plastic peg is very thin and over time breaks due to the engine vibration and the star is lost.
I had mine come off and was lost. I replaced it with a hood badge that came with the Star Grille I bought from 55Tech. That badge was way too big to fit in my hood divot (2010 model) so I could not use it on the hood (bought the best hood badge there ever was available from dfwdude to fit my car).
55Tech hood badge (original MB part) is perfect size for the engine cover and actually looks very good on it. Much better than the original silver star, but this is just my opinion.
I posted a picture of this badge on my engine cover in this forum before but I cannot even think how to search for it. I will post picture of it again when I return home in about two weeks.

Provide the outside diameter within the flat part of the divot (in MM), and I will see if the existing stars measure the same. If not, I will consider sizing one off Thingiverse.

The Original M278 star in the pictures below, measures about 60mm. The easiest thing I found that worked, was these knockoff wheel caps I bought from eBay UK. (but I think you can get them on Amazon US too). https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/393168466582
They are 60mm and the chrome star is pushed into the black cap but separates easily. btw, the trunk star is 75mm.
I just cut the tabs off the chrome star flush and glued it down. Though slightly noticeable, the star ends are slightly thicker, but the chrome is pretty decent.
I have 3 spares now
END RESULT:

The star has plastic pegs that go thru holes in the cover and are then melt on the underside to mushroom as to not fit thru the holes and so keep the star in place. No glue to wait so it is fast in production.
Problem is this melt end of the plastic peg is very thin and over time breaks due to the engine vibration and the star is lost.

For all of you sports fans reading post 33 in this thread... the dial micrometer measurement pictured converts to 56.77mm.
It appears to fill the divot in the engine cover nicely, with a smidge of room to spare.

Note: The dial calipers read 2.35 inches or 59.7mm (2.349” actually)

The (knockoff) replacement is almost identical diameter. +/- .004” ( .1mm)
I just cut the tabs off with an Xacto knife and it pops right off the black wheel cap.
Good Luck.

Saw this thread in the new posts. Maybe this helps. (Maybe it doesn’t ) The Star on the M278 cover does the same thing (falls off). If I remember right, I think the stars may be the same size.
The Original M278 star in the pictures below, measures about 60mm. The easiest thing I found that worked, was these knockoff wheel caps I bought from eBay UK. (but I think you can get them on Amazon US too). https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/393168466582
