CHANGED SENSORS BUT- STILL ABS/ESC inoperative, Run flat inoperative

Hi everyone!

I Have a 2011 e350 4matic. My break pads were in need of a change and on the highway one day the car just decelerated to 60km and that was it. Cruise control not working and hold feature not working.

I ran the scanning tool and I got codes d40b and d40c - left and right wheel speed sensors.
  • I replaced both sensors
  • New pads and rotars
  • Changed auxiliary battery
  • Checked compartment under steering wheel- everything plugged in
and re ran the scanning tool and the same codes have come up. I ran a live scanner and all wheels are running correctly same speed. The car will not run past 60km.

Please help!!!

Replacing parts doesn't always clear codes, drive cycles are necessary if you are not clearing them with whatever terminal you're using.

Clear them with your terminal then check back.

Seems odd would both go at the same time. The sensors typically read from a magnetic ring and those sometimes go bad from rust, so it could be those too. I feel like someone on here had that happen recently. Eric O. on his South Main Auto channel on YouTube has lots of videos on trouble shooting speed sensors. In this one he puts a scope into the speed sensor hole and shows the bad magnetic ring:

Also, be sure to verify your part numbers to make sure you have the right sensors.

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your advice, really humbly appreciate it!!!

Verifying that I cleared the codes.. went away but upon driving up to 30 or 40km steering wheel tightens back up and lights come on.

Verifying the sensors are the correct sensors
Will check to see if it is the ring itself and will check the video provided by my friend above.

Lately it seems that when most people get this problem, it's the ring. Could also be aftermarket sensors too, you should only use OEM MB parts, lots of aftermarket parts don't work right.

I don't think you mentioned clearing the codes with your scan tool. You do that after the repair? Maybe I missed that.

We did and it still came up. Some good suggestions here, it could be the ring, someone mentioned above.

Also confirming, it is also not the brake switch.. we replaced because it was cheap.. but didn't fix it.

Hi everyone- March 27, 2022 update.

We ran another scan test and one sensor came up.. right rear rpm sensor. We bought another speed sensor and installed. Everything worked! BUT... the lights are still on.. now the final situation is.. how do you get rid of the lights?? (Abs esc module inoperative, run flat indicator inoperative + associated lights on dash)

Many thanks to everyone's participation on this thread!

Did you reset the codes? Thats probably the next step.

Hi everyone,
I reset the codes again today and this time, only 1 rpm sensor code came up- this time, left rear (previously it was both). Both sensors were changed.. and the car runs perfectly fine.. but the lights come back on after hitting 20km/he or so..

Tried driving 110 km total distance to see of it would go away but it didn't.

Thinking of changing that left rear sensor again with a replacement sensor (maybe this one is faulty.. even though it's new)

For sensors, I only use OEM. Only on a rare occasion will I throw an aftermarket parts house sensor on a car to get me by in a pinch. I even prefer a known working 10yo OEM sensor to a new aftermarket Chinese parts house sensor.
