S212 Are facelift tail lights plug and play with pre facelift

Hello members,

Looking at replacing my '13 tail lights and noticed that face lift tail lights (m.y. '16) are less expensive than pre face lift (m.y.'13)
m.y. '16 Rear Lamp Combination (212-906-07-57) $222
m.y. '13 Rear Lamp Combination (212906085864) $302

This thread gives me confidence that I can install face lift tail lights in my pre chassis:
https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...ml#post8176386

Does anyone agree ?

I believe BadBenz94 did this conversion on his '13 , but I don't believe the '14-'16 taillights are the same size, the ones you reference are "facelift style" not the actual facelift taillights

I changed my lights out with the "facelifted" taillamps however mine were aftermarket Depo lights that have an adapter to allow the use of a full LED taillamp and not give errors. I dont think OEM are plug and play unfortunately.

For the prices you noted, these can't possibly be OEM taillights. If they are the Depos that badbenz94 used, then you might be ok. But I had to replace one of the four-piece light assemblies earlier this year (left inboard trunk light) and that 2016 OEM part alone cost me $358.60 from the dealer.

As noted, the bodywork is slightly different on the pre-facelift cars, so the OEM ribbon taillights will not fit anyway.

You have to but the aftermarket ones designed specifically to be plug and play. The OEM facelift ones will not be plug and play.

Those prices are only for the quarter panel light (I.e. no gate).

And... you will have to replace all four parts to have a complete upgrade. The OEM Quarter costs $450 at least.

Costs a bit less ... but it is a rather expensive upgrade.

According to EPC, both m.y. install the same gate part number 212-740-01-05 and fender p/n 212-630-05-21. Might work afterall.

What @DFWdude said ^^^. If you did get the OEM, you need to get the updated bumper cover too as a gap will be present with the pre-facelift bumper cover.

Just do yourself the favor and save a lot of headaches n get the Depos. I used some of their parts on my old ‘94 and had zero issues with them. They are quality parts. They are made in Taiwan which DOESN’T mean China. Taiwan produced items are good stuff imo.
