Steering wheel adjustment

Re: 2112, E 350 Cabriolet. The steering wheel adjustment to the lower right of the st. wheel controls the telescopic function and the up and down function. The up/down function has decided to stop working(telescopic still functions). I can feel when the wheel adjustment gets to an extreme point through the "bump" in the steering wheel. Any ideas of what I'm looking at in $ if I bring this to a dealer. In addition any ideas on how to get this fixed w/o visiting our friends at the dealer ?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ed

Dealer is always $$$$$$$$

There is a thread with tons of info on taking steering column out and going over all the gearing motors and computer crap in there. May help guide you on the adventure

Before getting into disassembly, my '13 started doing this in 2019, I followed someones instructions to work the up down switch on the wheel while pulling moderately in the direction I pushed the switch, after three or four tries back and forth, it started moving again then I set the memory just a little above all the way down, haven't had an issue since.

Quint is right though, the gearbox gets jammed up all the way down.

That's awesome!!!! Glad it worked out, replacing that assembly is like 2k if done at the dealer. Now, set the memory to 1/8" above all the way down and it will be fine, at least mine has been fine for three years now.

The diagnosis is the column mechanism needs to be adjusted for lack of looseness. Lube spray: no joy.

The workaround is if you bang on the steering wheel while pushing the control buttons it should come unstuck.

Once you have done that too many times the best course is to DISABLE the "convenience entry".

The steering control module and nearby Ignition Module are both built with optical electronic position sensors and delicate solderless modules all sensitive to stressors.

I recommend not to bang on your wheel if disabling can help it !!! Either adjust the gearing or discontinue usage.

Thank u for response.
So to bang or not bang?

Or should i just disable the convenience feature and bang?

Is this an easy job to adjust the gear manually?
i can diy it if there is guidances. Thank you

No, you don't want to bang, just pull or push in the direction you are pushing the switch, so get some one to push the switch while you are pulling and pushing, moderate force at most, that's why its good to know where the wheel is in respect to the dash, if it's all the way in or close to the dash you want to pull out or towards you with two hands on the wheel at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock, if the wheel is all the way out, push moderately in towards dash while someone pushes the lever. The clicking you're hearing is the drive gear not engaging with the track, so you need to get it to re-engage, then not let it go so far again that it binds up or disengages the gear, does that make sense?
