To Have a Cupholder or Not to Have a Cupholder?

I wanted to share my experience with the storage area. Normally, I was contemplating to buy a cupholder for my car albeit I don't drink a lot while driving but I guess this area is also very handy. No wonder my car's key could fit there but surprising thing is that my sunglass could also be able to fit there, and I was able to close the lid with my sunglass sitting just there .I think this could be a better area to place your regular stuff rather than armrest

My car came like this when I bought it, not sure why the previous owner decided to take the cupholder insert with him. Very weird thing to want to keep....

Anyway, I tried using it without the insert for a few months and while it was convenient for me to throw my wallet and keys in there, the lack of an easily accessible cupholder was a deal breaker, every time I'd put a bottle of water in there without the insert, the bottle would go flying into the passenger seat any time there was moderate-hard braking or if I took a turn faster than 10 km/h.

Found the part number on EPC and ordered the insert from eBay for $30. Now wallet and sunglasses go in the armrest and keys in the ashtray.

But I suppose this all comes down to personal preference and how much you use the cupholder. It is definitely a very convenient storage location, and I would have kept it as shown in your picture but on the rare occasion that I do have something to drink in the car, I'd like somewhere to put it.

Of all parts on my 2011 S212- the cup holder is an MB afterthought. It hold cups securely, but it is cheap plastic with squeaks and rattles.
I always feel it is a German reminder that you should only focus on the road. Never drink or eat in the car.

Yes, Germans are way behind when it comes to cup holder technology. I just had a passenger in the rear and had to open the center armrest to get the cupholder to flip out. She got a huge cup of Dunkin and traffic came to a sudden stop on the highway so I had to brake hard and her cup fell out of the cupholder, not sure exactly what she did, but maybe it wasn't in all the way.

I also had to buy the cupholder, mine was also missing. My covers springs also weren't working and it wasn't coming out so I had to take apart mine to get it working back to normal again. There's a bunch of springs and clips in the cupholder. It's usually just me so I end up tossing the sunglasses on the passenger seat, the keys fit easily into the other cupholder but I try to keep them in my pocket because I forget sometimes when they're in the cupholder so you wonder for half a second why the car doesn't lock, then have to reach back in again to grab the keys. Everyone who posts seems to have faded wood or have replaced the wood.

IMHO, the keyfob should never be left in the car. I keep mine in my pants pocket at all times.

You really have gorgeous wood trim. I think the wood trim on the sides on the 2010-2013 models is better than the aluminum trim that you have on the edges.

Nice but it should work when there's no passenger or your car don't come with the massaging multicontour seats . That wood trim is my fave as well but I prefer aluminum on the edges

I agree. BUT... It is so easily movable for passengers. Usually I just throw it on the rear seat, but I suppose I could try placing it in the map pocket behind the passenger seat. (Picture is not my car... or purse!)

(EDIT: OK, I tried this and it won't fit... The map pocket is not flat across, so the insert will not fit flush.)

Funny you should ask... Just this last week, I glued the bottom edge (the part that jams between the seat and console) back together.

Easy to do with Gorilla Glue and rubber bands to hold things together while the glue sets.

I wouldn't say it is cheaply made. Just that the bottom edge does take a lot of stress pushing it in place and removing it dozens of times (I do remove it when passengers need the room). So, lots of wear and tear. I'll see how the repair holds.
