It can be one of many components but the vast majority find that it is a leaking air spring that degrades with age vs mileage driven. You can spend lots of time spraying everything down with soapy water looking for a leak, but I chose to replace the air springs earlier this year as it was going to need them eventually. I haven't had an issue since.

front suspension strut has an air spring that is integral. Air suspension is at all 4 corners.

Yeah as Key08 says you have air struts up front. I thought of that after I hit send. My wagon only has rear air springs with coil sprung struts in the front. The air springs from Arnott are reasonably priced at ~$400 / pair, which I installed myself in few hours. Those struts are going to run you ~$700 each so I would be less likely to want to just throw parts at it. But if yours are original it's only a matter of time before they begin to leak.

I thought I read that the affordable Arnott air springs are only suitable for the wagon rear "SLS" (self leveling suspension) and not for the full Airmatic on the V8 models.

@KEY08 wonder why I could only find listing for the rear Air Spring online?

what I just said. there's two different air spring systems, the wagons have SLS, rear air spring leveling only, while the E550s have full airmatic 4 wheel with dynamic shocks. the springs are not interchangable, and Arnott only sells the SLS style wagon springs. you'll need to get the full 4 wheel parts from the dealer, and they are $$$$

My E550 4Matic has the same as S550?

Replace the rear air springs and that should fix it. They're about $200 each side (Arnott).

The Arnott air springs are NOT the correct ones for the 4 wheel Airmatic system on a E550. the Arnott springs are for a rear only SLS (self leveling) setup on a E350 wagon.

4Matic isn't going to change a thing. The fronts should still have the 1 piece air strut (Strut and bag integrated) and the rears are separate shocks and bags. This guy below has a 2011 E550 4Matic and shows him changing the the rear shocks alone. The bag is still separate, so he can replace the rear bags alone.

has nothing to do with 4matic, the rear air springs are different in the all 4 wheel adjustable Airmatic on the E550 and the simple fixed SLS of the 6 cyl wagons

Why are we even mentioning the E350 wagon? The original poster has an issue with the rear sagging overnight on his W212 E550. I mentioned to change his rear air springs and he should be good to go.

Arnott makes only 1 set of rear air springs that should work on 4matic and non-4matic E550’s. There shouldn’t be anymore discussion after this.
