Angry Knuckle Head strikes again!! Active Hood Malfunction??

Hey Guys,

Dumbarse Aussie at it again!!

While disconnecting the 2 batteries to power cycle the car to see if it would fix some issues, I undid the check straps on the hood to allow it to open up fully so I could get the battery cover off.

Once I reconnected the batteries its now got this error coming up???

I am guessing the movement on the hinge plate has caused something to come loose??

What the hell is a Squib???

How do I access the underside to see if its been disconnected....weird given the hood is designed to open fully vertical too!!

So the system consists of actuators that pop the hood up in case the hood is squished even slightly, thats what those little packets are behind the main hinge, the hood gets bumped and the idea is the hood ejects upwards to roll the pedestrian over the car. Now why I care about pedestrians getting hit in luxury is beyond me when I'm the one paying for their free ride, but Mercedes seems to want to keep our insurance premiums down I guess.

You obviously didn't hit anything, but the system needs to be reset, is your hood propped up in the back? You can seat the hood again with a firm press downwards. If not, we have to start diagnosing other things, it's out of my control since usually thats the fix for the AMG cars with it I see. Now if there is a fault with the actuator and it TRIED to fire but didn't work, we gotta throw some parts at it. Theres actuators, the little pouch things which get squished and tell the system to activate, and I believe there is a sensor involved.

Note to self. Avoid leaning over the hood of a newer Mercedes and squishing it.

A lot of Mercedes "foresight" into saving pedestrians and the environment ends up making the car worse.

I leave my PreSAFE on in case it saves me some day, but good god it's annoying if you drive drive.

The CLS design was speficially towards not cleaving pedestrians in half, because you know when you cook $80,000 hitting peasants is some kind of priority, I have always loathed the CLS500 for how it looked. It's probably why the G-wagen is so great, it never got destroyed by a committee and it cuts people down in style.

The active hood, biodegradeable harnesses of the 90's, Sensotronic braking which makes your car difficult if not impossible to bleed at home, distronic radar that shuts down your ABS and other electronics when the sensor gets wet, etc

Did some Googling around using the error code B2730-13

Came across this video thats really helpful

I'll get her car on the hoist/lift and see if this sensor is damaged or unplugged?

here's the thing with German cars, once you understand their stupid systems, they're often easier to comprehend than other cars, few people truly have that mastery. The active hood things were new to me and its absurd that so many extra parts and sensors go into a system that to be honest, doesn't affect me

But I bet you enjoy your ride, do you not? I think it is the price to pay for some kind of "OCD" on that side.

I do work with German colleagues on day to day basis, and their attention to detail plus my own OCD has made me a better engineer. When they commit to finding the root cause of any issue, Nothing gets ignored. Unfortunately, the solutions sometimes are complex beyond me. I try to keep them simple and grounded.

I’d like to shake hands with the engineers that came up with this and, while I have a good hold, kick them firmly in the ****! Makes cruise control mostly useless for our winter driving…

I bet you can "repair" this by opening the hood and lettting it close by itself from two feet, mine does this everytime I get the oil changed as the mechanic closes the hood softly.

hehe... From 2 feet I have to SLAM the hood to stop the sensor... letting it simply fall from 2 feet just warns me while driving that the latch is open.

It's also crazy that when it thinks it's open, the wipers won't work. Brilliant.

If you guys have to slam your hood more than you feel is "right" you might lubricate your hood latches annually. you'd be surprised how much the hood closing effort increases over time without this.

Hood hinges, hood latch, sunroof track, doors, trunk, etc. This is the service MB tells you they do for your $1000+ services but uh.. well yeah.
