Old hood emblem stood straight up, new don’t????

Someone stole my emblem off the hood, so I ordered a new one. I know my old one would stand straight up, I just took new one out of the box because I just got it today and noticed it’s on a backwards pitch, can’t move it and any direction… my question is are they supposed to be like this or are they made to sit straight up? I’ll post picture

It don’t move at all

Sorry to hear about your old emblem . Well, I have fiddled with many Mercedes-Benz hood emblems since my childhood and all of them have moved to backwards or forwards .It's very strange your doesn't move at all . I have not handled any of W213s or W223s though

Right up my alley...

All upright stars are made with the backward lean. Install it in the hood and you will see that it sits much more upright, because the hood is curved downwards at the front. The angles cancel each other out.

The upright star is designed to move back and forth so as not to break when struck in an accident. I've read elsewhere on these forums that the star is designed to give way should the car strike anything that rides up and over the hood, such as a pedestrian. Bad form to strike a pedestrian, but at least Mercedes-Benz has your back so you don't cut anyone in half.

Bottom line, install the upright star then close the hood. At this point, the star should flex backward (and forwards) into its static position. You won't be able to straighten it without it being in place, using the hood for leverage. You won't have this leverage off the hood.

Among the thousand or so OEM upright stars I've handled through the years, I've not run into one that was truly "stuck" in one position, as the star is mounted on a sturdy spring intended to give way. You can push the star into the base slightly to free it if it seems locked. Then wiggle it fore and aft into its normal position.

I bought a knockoff for my car that was half the proce of OEM-- it wouldnt move. SO sent back and got an OEM and it moves as per previous post-- cost was double but works.

I think it is the law in Europe that anything mounted on the hood must be of easily moving kind for safety when hitting people in accidents. If the star does not move it is not original Mercedes part.

Yeah I bought a knock off on eBay and it claimed it was real but it was a knock off as it didn't even fit right. I had to take off a piece off the old star in order for it to even fit in the slot. Should have just sent it back, they knocked $10 off the price so it only cost me $10 instead of $20 but the real one was about $40. I figured I was just going to do something stupid like knock it off when brushing snow off the car again and need a new one again anyway at some point. It looked real and everything, even came in an MB box with the MB part number but I guess they can fake anything these days. Must have used a bad mold which is why it was probably off or they made too many copies and the mold wore out. At the time I figured it was pretty low tech and how can you screw up a copy of a hood star. But yeah, that can also be screwed up by a fake. I'm guessing either the new one has a very stiff spring so it won't move at all til you have it mounted or it's a fake and you'll have trouble moving it because the spring is too stiff.

Fake or OEM, the star is held in place through a plated sphere in a ball joint, connected to a VERY stiff spring below. In order to disassemble the upright stars efficiently, I used a small, 2-Ton bottle jack to compress the spring so I could unhook the star.
