glowplug nightmare - will DPF still work?

So I have one glowplug faulty. local garage unsure if it's the connector or the glowplug itself as the glowplug and connector were rusty (!) (the others apparently not though)

They've cleaned it all up but think it needs a new connector before trying to remove and think it might have been that giving the fault it so i'm waiting until the early part of next week for that to arrive and be fitted.

Before they looked at it the glowplug light came on for 60 secs after starting when the car was warm but not when it was cold.

Now it comes on for 60 seconds whenever the car is started



The real issue is I am going on holiday in the car next weekend (600 mile round trip) and I am worried the faulty plug will cause the DPF to not regen and all that hassle.

Can anybody advise if the drive is going to be do-able ?

I've been in contact with a specialist who say they can get the plug out but not before I go away

car is 2010 W212 E350 CDi

The glow plug system is only active when the cold engine is being started. It has nothing to do with normal temperature operation.
Drive happy. Get it fixed when you have time..

thanks but on engines with DPF the glow plugs are part of the system that helps with DPF regen so what i'm wondering is will the engine still be able to regen the DPF with one glowplug not working

Modern glowplug have grown to become complicated. It's not just for start. They can help diesel combustion during cold conditions.

You have one bad GP and can expect which way this is going.
When burn is incomplete, DPF will get plugged with soot.
Best to be proactive with all MB maintenance!

Are you sure about this? I have not heard nor read on any of the vehicels Ive owned about the glow plugs (intake heaters) having anything to do with normal operations as far as DPF is concerned. Ecspecially in 2010. Even my 2014 both truck and MB car have not had glow plugs or intake heaters come on even in -20F weather during normal warmed up operation. During startup and warmup yes, however the DPF is not going to try a regen during non normal operating temps which modern diesels can achieve even during cold weather.

That being said if your in Borrow Alaska during winter only driving at top speed of 30mph thru dug out trenches essentially, then yes the DPF will require manual regens and this would have to be worked out with the manufacturer providing the proper electrical programmer to perform such.

yes, it absolutely can.

Is it good to ignore... ?
I don't think so. Even DPF regen uses glowplugs

Curiouse where that info came from and what vehicles/engines does it apply too. Can garuntee my truck doesnt have this setup or requirement with its dpf/scr as the intake heater (no glow plugs) have been disconnected since 20k miles (has 170k now but no dpf/scr). Either way doesnt bother it at all except little rougher at startup in very cold weather and a little grey smoke on start up. Goes away in 15sec or so.

Older diesels I use to have to work with didnt even have glow plugs. If ya didnt plug the block heaters in the night before when temps were - teens it was a pain to get em started lol.

I had GP modules fail on couple of my cars and back in CA, the engines would start without GP, even on colder days with 60F.
The old. IP engine in VW would take couple of minutes of cranking to fire, but common rail diesel took just 3 seconds of turning to fire up and run just fine.
Even when you have 1 or 2 dead GP, within few seconds those engines will warm up to create self-ignition.
No GP working on hot engine, when DPF regeneration happens.
