Hi All,

So we have a 2014 E350 sedan and lately have noticed that when the tank is completely full and parking inside we can smell gas in the garage. However, there is no smell in the vehicle as far as I can tell. This issue only happens when the tank is full and after about a gallon is gone it doesn't happen. My indy checked the fuel senders and covers but said they are bone dry and no sign of leaking or pooling as they are clean as well and not discolored. Has anyone else experienced this? As well, I've always thought the fuel gauge has been incorrect the readings, but the multiple times I took to the dealers they never found an issue.

Your indy specialist did the right thing about checking for broken plastic tank covers.

Since this condition only happens with tank full, that reminds me about the decal :
"DO NOT TOP-OFF FUEL TANKS".

I would check your charcoal EVAP canister is not flooded with gasoline.
Drive around a little to use up gas and dry EVAP canister.

Don't overfilling tank... all good?

This is a common issue on the 211, but also carries over to the W212. Check Senior Leigh. I believe the fuel tank filter is cracked and needs to be replaced.

Remove the rear seat cushion and inspect the filter.

When I fill up once it clicks the gas pump handle I take it out. I will have them check the charcoal EVAP canister.

I'll do that as well.

Thank you both for your advice.

Also, I noticed these metal shavings in my fuel filler neck as well what seems to be a crack in the lining when I was filling up last time. What could cause this?

I also smell fuel but only outside regardless of fuel tank level . I think my canister needs to be replaced as well

Metal Shavings in fuel filler neck
Just stumbled upon this thread because I noticed the same issue. I found a bunch of metal shavings in the fuel filler neck. This is a 2013 W212 E350 gas with about 110k miles. I just recently acquired the car. I am assuming that it has something to do with metal on metal with the gas cap? I suspect there is a coarse filter on the gas tank fuel pump and a much more robust filter between the gas tank pump and the high pressure fuel pump (I assume this car has one as it is direct injection) that would deal with these metal shavings. Those shavings would definitely kill injectors or HPFP if they made it there.

Is this common to see and no concern?

I think this thread us about the fuel tank SEAL being pressurized and leaking smell outside.

The shavings you saw may be partly normal. I would keep that in mind but not loose anytime with this.
Does your car from outside smell like gasoline ??

Apologies. Completely forgot to give an update. I filled up the tank to the max level when it clicks off the pump right down the street from my mechanics and drove right over. They let it sit for about a hour and then checked the fuel covers under the back seats and indeed one of the fuel tank covers had a very small crack and was seeping a bit of fuel. They replaced with part number 2044700438. No issues since.

That's nice, my fuel smell was also fixed . It was due to low pressure valve as well as hoses

Hello everyone, came in here with the same consequences but a slightly different root problem as I understand so far. Today I went to my car and noticed some spot near rear passenger side wheel, seemed to me as a gas. It was a gas leaking coming from evap canister to a cloth wheel house liner.

I do not have any scan diagnostic tool just no check what is going on in the ECU but it definetely seems to me that somewhere on the canister is a gas leak. Probably, the issue is with some connection, maybe seal. Have to discover more tomorrow when I'll try to remove a hose just to pull out that bad boy. The OEM part # is A2044700659.
One more thing, when I opened the tank cap I could hear some noise like air was coming out for some time.
I've made some research but couldn't find gas leaking issue reffered to a evap canister.
If you have any thoughts on this, please let me know.

@gaazmon Hi, I am having the same issue. Is that all they replaced and was this on the passenger or drivers side. What was the cost. When I first smelled the gas I called the MBZ dealer just to get a start and information. They said both the sending unit side and fuel pump side (both passenger and drivers side units) would need to be replaced for $2100.

Yes that is all they changed. I believe it was passenger side. Part # 2044700438. There is also a seal for it, I think part # 2114710179.

Following up on this. As I was suspecting, after a computer diagnose it was a bad tank fuel pressure sensor mounted on top of the fuel tank. Can't change it without dropping the tank. After working with some other stuff was able to replace it and it's been almost a year after repair and no fuel leak was detected.
Thanks everyone.

@andmat
total side note, but please tell me you weren't working under the car with it supported only by the crappy jack shown in your first post.
Jack stands are cheap. Replacement limbs aren't.

Thanks for your update though!

haha
No worries, it was just a quick check on a parking lot when the leak revealed for the first time.
I'm so confused. MB put that sensor in such a deep place, I would have done this much faster if it had been accessible from under the rear seats.
Thanks!
