BMW X1 or E-Class 350

Hello, I am looking at the 2 above vehicles and having a hard time deciding. The BMW is 2018 with 21K miles and the Benz is 2016 with 38K miles. Which car is going to be less to maintain and/or more reliable?

One is a FWD biased minicooper wearing BMW badges and likely a turd of a 2.0 4 cylinder waiting to blow up. The other is one of the last reliable mercedes with a proven 3.5 V6, and is the final year with an updated infotainment system.

Thank you for responding. Is 38K miles on the high side before a bunch of repairs might be needed? Could I expect this car to last 100K?

You can expect it to last 300K if you take care of it properly. My 2012 E350 went 170K with zero issues before I wrecked it.

my 2014 E350/M276 has 98K: plugs @60K, tranny service @70K, original brakes, 2nd set of tires, and still 10K minimum on them, 2nd main battery, 3rd aux battery, engine mounts @40k under warranty., plus regular oil/filter

Absolutely, it could not get any cheaper to maintain. And I have had Toyotas and Honda in the past.

Just use an MB trusted independent mechanic

Also, there is no gasoline 4 cyl turbo engine that will outlast a reliable NA V6. Gasoline Turbo engines are for fun, not for longevity.

I was reading up on service A and service B yearly services. Are oil changes only needed once a year? I would only put around 10K a year driving

On a side note ,I am also looking at a 2018 C 300 with 26K miles. Are they reliable or should I stick with the E class?

I think the Mercedes-Benz would be less to maintain and more reliable. The X1 is a rinky dink lower level BMW model vs the E350 was pretty bang in the middle, Mercedes-Benz bread and butter in 2016.

Yes the Mercedes-Benz will last to 100K miles easily. If it is peace of mind you're looking for, we do offer extended warranty coverage for both vehicles mentioned above from our two providers Fidelity and Freedom Warranty, you can reach me at the contract information below if you have any questions or would like more information.

I started oil services by the book, 10K miles intervals, but I changed to 5K miles intervals as many in the forums do.

On the C300 2018, it uses the M274 engine ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merced...70/M274_engine) , I would read
https://thelemonfirm.com/2022/11/17/...0the%20dealer.

Do your due diligence, and make your own decision. Search MBWorld for horror stories, and decide by yourself. It may be true that is a random (within the statistical error) failure, but feel free to bet in Vegas for US$10K+ engine repair.

I already did mine: no M274 engine will ever be in my garage unless it is a guest at my house.

Different vehicles totally . One is SUV the other is a premium sedan . BMW even if a SUV can't beat the practicability of Mercedes-Benz at all . Their trunk is big in size but practicability wise not there yet . You can't fit a L size suitcase side by side in a G30 either . I namely call that model because it's a direct rival to Mercedes-Benz E Class .BMW seats are not for tall people to me .Engine maintenance wise , Mercedes-Benz should provide less hassle for the owner . Ok, that's enough for BMW bashing

E Class all day everyday imo. Get pre purchase inspection from reliable garage on the vehicle you're leaning towards to avoid buying a lemon.

My 2016 E350 just passed 40,000, and drives as new. Mercedes recommends 10,000 mile (or 1-year) oil changes, but you can change more often if you are paranoid.

Ignore that guidance, change every 5K miles with MB spec synthetic. 10K oil changes are marketing intervals and very likely contribute to the engine cylinder scoring issues seen in certain M278 models.

X1 is loud and quite stiff. E350 is a quiet, comfortable, and very strong car. Ours is now 10 years old with 145k miles and still drives like new. Shocks/struts replaced around 90k, but other than that just regular service and the rather common coil failures. I keep a code reader in the glove box, and a couple of extra coils in the garage. When the wife has a misfire, it's about a 1 hour job to replace the coil.

The only weak spots I've found on this car are coils, and the faux-leather seats, which can split after a while.

Other than that, the car looks and drives like the day we brought it home.

MB’s of all kinds.
If you want a SUV get a SUV. Don’t waste your $ on a crossover. If you don’t go for the X5 or greater than get the W212. It is a nice reliable car.
