BMW X1 or E-Class 350

Absolutely, it could not get any cheaper to maintain. And I have had Toyotas and Honda in the past.
Just use an MB trusted independent mechanic
Also, there is no gasoline 4 cyl turbo engine that will outlast a reliable NA V6. Gasoline Turbo engines are for fun, not for longevity.

On a side note ,I am also looking at a 2018 C 300 with 26K miles. Are they reliable or should I stick with the E class?

On the C300 2018, it uses the M274 engine ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merced...70/M274_engine) , I would read

Do your due diligence, and make your own decision. Search MBWorld for horror stories, and decide by yourself. It may be true that is a random (within the statistical error) failure, but feel free to bet in Vegas for US$10K+ engine repair.
I already did mine: no M274 engine will ever be in my garage unless it is a guest at my house.

The only weak spots I've found on this car are coils, and the faux-leather seats, which can split after a while.
Other than that, the car looks and drives like the day we brought it home.
