Some tips on M271 EVO ( Turbo ) Swirl Motor of intake system

When you open up the swirl motor, make sure when installing back the motor, the swirl flap linkage is to be at the ZERO degree or % position I marked below :
If seen from the top, the MOTOR movement is from RIGHT TO LEFT. I could not find the WIS for this information.
When motor is removed and seeing it at the shaft end, the movement seemingly opposite aka LEFT to RIGHT.
Zero position, pulled to zero degree or % by spring inside the motor
At 10 %

What happen if one install the motor when the swirl flap linkage is at the wrong angle aka MAXIMUM ?
01. No Check Engine Light
02. Low RPM drive-ability will be slight effected.
03. DTC will be produced eventually, but not the urgent kind to the level of CEL.
04. When you use Xentry to actuate, it will still work but it will fail when % is higher than 20%.
So deceiving.So the flap linkage still has room to move, but not full motion to 99%.
05. When you try to TEACH it, it will fail, because full motion can not be achieved.
06. The azz-hole part is that, there is no live data of actual % movement of the flap, even though there is a data PID for it. These % numbers, both will not show any value other than 0%
even when at 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear pull all the way to redline RPM. Why would MB/Siemens place such data if it shows nothing ?
ABOVE : Not related to swirl motor but this engine upon 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear pull to max RPM, the heat build up is so fast. From 99C it shoot up to 111C...insane !!!
Its engine coolant temp sensor is at thermostat housing, so it reads fast.

07. There will be misfire , stationary test, when I maintain slowly 1,900 to 2,400 RPM.
My indie, his staff made this mistake when replacing new gasket for the M59 Swirl Motor.
Good thing, I get extra know how from it.

I had sent the car to a local shop to fix a fuel leak from a dried out hose, and after the repair the car was idling poor and jerked when cruising at low RPM.
i searched numerous threads and videos for days… then suddenly this popped up. It was my last attempt at a fix before selling the car, and as soon as I removed the motor, I saw that the position of the flaps was incorrect! I simply pushed it in the direction you instructed, fitted the motor back and the problem was instantly gone!
Thank you so much for posting this, especially for an engine that is discontinued and slowing fading away as these cars age… I’ll easily keep the car for another 1-2 years because of your help!

- P2015 Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1
- P2015: The Position Sensor or Position Switch For The Charge Movement Flap (Cylinder Bank 1) Has A Malfunction.
- P2016: The Position Sensor or Position Switch for the Charge Movement Flap (Cylinder Bank 1) Has A Short Circuit To Ground.
The car shifts smoothly, accelerates normally, and has a normal idle with no shudders, etc. If the light wasn't on, I wouldn't know anything is wrong.
Is the position sensor/ position switch the same as the swirl motor? Is there a swirl sensor?

MB likes to use a few names for a single device. Swirl flap = Charge movement flap for M271.8 EVO
M271.8 EVO, 1.8 Turbo 4 cylinder, only has 1 air manipulation device inside its intake manifold, so it is easy to indentifty.
What scanner are you using ? Try to get Xentry if you can.
Your DTC is about the hall sensor being "bad" or its position data is not proper.
Inside the swirl motor M59, the hall sensor or position sensor is there ....Inside

M59b1 = b1 inside M59 assembly . The hall sensor is the b1.

Are you decent with DC electrical ?
Do you have a multimeter, prefer one with duty cycle feature ?
Do you have needle probe to probe the swirl motor connector for its signal ?
If you are OK with all above, I will tell you how to troubleshoot, the hall sensor side.
Firts off, clean the connector with electrical contact cleaner. Before even doing anything else.
M271.8 is a very "oily" engine unless you maintain it very very well. So it maybe as simple as too much dirt at the electrical connector of M59.
