Reliable W212 Facelift engines?

Hi everyone.

I'm looking to buy a W212 Restyle/Facelift , I was wondering what are the most reliable and powerful engines these cars have had?

I'm thinking of OM642, M272 and M276 , no V8s.

I'd like to get a little extra power out of them , by that I mean taking them to stage 1 or 2, if this info is of any help to you.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help!

M276 is the most reliable in the list.

.... and you can get a lot more torque & power with the TT version of M276.

Here in the US, the M276 is your best bet. But you didn't note what country you live in... The availability of existing engines may be different in IT.

You may not get much extra power out of any of the NA variants. That leads to the turbo variants, and the V6 TT will beat the V8 TT hands down on reliability, not on the road though.

If I have to pick, M276 NA eyes closed. However, if you want to mess with tuning, M276 TT.

Now, if you have disposable money, and I mean Vegas money you can experiment with the V8 TT (variants built before March 2015 are riskier). It will be fun , UNTIL

I concur with @juanmor40 . If you can find an E400, I think you will be very happy if you plan to tune. The E350 at around 300hp is very nice, but getting more out of it is going to be more trouble than it is worth.

indeed, the stock M276 3.5 NA engine is about as tuned as you'd want, with Direct Injection, variable cam, etc etc. 300HP and ft-lbs from a reliable 3.5L V6 is no laughing matter. Of course, if you /really/ want fast, get a W213 E63S, hah hah. 600 horses, hold onto your hat! If I had a E63, it would be a white wagon, AMG badges deleted, a total sleeper that will blow away most anything on the road when in 'rage' mode, and is a mild mannered daily driver in 'E' mode.

Good friends have an E400 - probably the most trouble free car they've owned... I'm partial to the ride and power of ours (Airmatic), and hopefully never get in an E63s to alter my perspective...

i know a guy who bought a new E63S, he kept it until the extended warranty was ending, and promptly sold it. said he never had any major problems with it other than the usual new car weirdnesses, but it was WAY too complicated of a car to maintain once it gets up in miles.

I have a 2014 E63s, bought it 3-1/2 years ago with 38k miles it currently has 51K trouble free miles. Neither me nor the previous owner had any issues with the car. I still have another 1-1/2 year of un-tapped Fidelity platinum warranty LOL

I live in Italy, so we have access to mostly Diesel engines and they are seen as really reliable here.
Does that change my best choice?

OM651 or the newer OM654 as far as reliability goes. Im sure over there in italy tuning them is easier then here in the states. Not sure what people get out of them though. I know stock they are 200hp roughly and almost double that in torque. Not bad for a 4 banger diesel.

Pretty amazing fuel mileage as well. Thats why I got mine, I drive about 110miles per day during the week and 40mpg US is good enough. Would be alot higher but afternoon traffic is annoying to say the least. If I had morning traffic I could easily get 47-48mpg US.

With a simple software tune, you can get 400 hp (or more) out of the M276 3.0 liter bi-turbo. That is the engine in the E400 and other models identified as _400, _450, or _43 AMG.

Don't forget about the R172 SLC 43, W166 GLE 450, W218 CLS 400, W205 C 450, X166 GL 450 and GLS 450 and the pre-facelift W213/C238/A238 E 450

Even the S400 (not the USA). I think @JettaRed abbreviation works better which joins all the platforms.

I do agree but there is a small exception, the facelift E-Class and the all new E-Class E 450 has the M256 but that is the only exception I think?

The 43 also became an inline-4 M139 as well.

If we count Europe in the W214 E 400 e is also no longer an M276. Then there is the V167 GLE 450 with the M256. C257 CLS 450 with the M256, etc. I guess the list goes on.
