Question Does the rear diff oil need to be changed?

Hi Folks,

So I picked up my Mercedes W212 around 6 months ago with 60k miles, it's a 2.2 diesel. I couldn't find any paperwork for the rear diff oil being changed in the past so I called up my local MB dealership to get a quote and they have told me that the rear diff oil doesn't need to be changed unless it's the AMG model? (E65 etc) is this correct or are they having me on?

Yes, you need to eventually change it. It is mentioned on WIS, that said this example is based on a W205 not the W212. The front diff was not mentioned on WIS however would recommend changing the fluid as well. I think the more important thing is having the transmission fluid changed if it haven't already been done. That does wonders for the shifting quality and to prolong the life of the transmission.

I think it's a good idea to change at around your mileage. Rear is easy to do. Is yours a 4Matic? Front diff fluid is a little more challenging (there is no fill hole on mine) but very doable.

No so mine is just normal RWD and not the 4matic. I’ll speak to an individual garage and see if they can do it instead since the main dealer doesn’t want to do it

Thanks for your reply, so I’ve actually just had the transmission oil changed recently so I’m just looking to get the rear diff done now. I’ll contact a garage in a few days and get them to do the rear diff oil change.

Well, that's what they say. HOWEVER, fresh fluid of the correct spec will never hurt anything and removing the old fluid may allow you to see problems within the differential if there are any. I changed mine at 60K and it wasn't much of a job.

Do you mind letting us know how much you paid for tranny service, just to get an idea because I'll need to get mine done soon? And was this a dealer service? Thanks.

I had the front and rear differential oil changed at 55k and again at 102k when they did the transmission services, tranny service was 400 the second time and 100 to do the front and rear diffs.

Probably between $600 and $700. Your dealer may let you bring your own parts and you just pay the labor. Mine did. The tech confirmed all the parts were genuine Mercedes. The fluid was Pentosin/Fuchs, which I believe is OE for Mercedes.

There's no service to replace Diff. oil... the service is to replace whole differential + 1Qt of 75w90.

I did my RWD diff. at 50kMi...
oil was in good condition but...
loaded with fine glitter from soft gears

So I invested in a neodymium diff. plug.

Problem cancelled!

The fluid is 75W85 GL5, though FCP will show 75W90 fluid, as well. The fill plug and drain plug use a 14mm hex socket.

special plug style

the differential fill/drain plugs have no washer seal... instead a self-sealing tapered cone shape is used.

For some unknown reason the stars aligned and MB decided the rear diff was going to be as simple as every other rear diff to change fluid in. Its pretty amazing but true. They actually put fill and drain plugs on it that are somewhat easily accessible. Follow cali's advice and get a magnetic drain plug if possible.

On my om651 e250 4matic I changed both front and back at 105k miles, front looked like engine oil (used), rear looked basically brand new. Didnt have it tested though.

The main dealer does not want to change the oil in a rear diff? I would definitely not return to that mechanic. This is a very easy procedure. It took me less than a 1/2 hour.

Yes, weird though, both times the front was dirtier than the back, I have no clue why

Pierre, the front has a much-much harder life than the rear....
Front axle chews up bearings routinely, the rear never does.

I believe this is caused by the wheel RPM differences.

I wonder if it also has to do with the engine is in the front and that is heavy?
