Problem with starter E350 OM642
What would could be starter or EIS

Use a $150 Launch MB scanner to read chassis faults, then you'll know.
Could also be a relay in the front fuse box (fSAM).

Read the voltage and current consumption during :
01. Immediate crank to start
02. Ignition ON for 5-6 seconds and then crank.
The glow plug heater needs lots of power, easy 100 watts each cylinder.
So if your battery is weak, by doing 5-6 seconds wait, the battery amperage drain could be high enough to render no more enough CCA for the starter which will need
peak about 600ish amps for first 1/4 to 1/2 second of cranking from zero crankshaft speed or zero starter speed.
Typical cranking with starter already spinning is about 220 Amps for my 6 cylinder petrol engine.
