they says i need a new thermostat
i drove the car and it drives just fine,
the temperature got up to 87 C after short ride, so i dont really understand the problem???
i think this is a job i could probably do myself
autozone wants $217 for the part, but i notice it can be had for a lot less elsewhere
any advice on where to get one would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance

Im not saying that its not your thermostat, just saying there may be other reasons. One was due to a low battery. Have you had the battery tested lately, how old is it?
The thermostat should open around 100 degrees C. When you start the car and start driving does the temp slowly rise to over 80 C, then around 90 C it should drop a little which is the thermostat opening.
If it takes awhile to get up to temp and you dont notice a small drop in the temp around 90 C then the thermostat may be stuck open, or faulty o-ring in there.
Im not sure which engine you have. On my M272 the Mercedes brand thermostat is stamped Wahler, so if I had to replace it i would just buy the Wahler brand which is less expensive than Mercedes branded.

Now, use your scanner to reset the ECU calling the CEL... hopefully whatever fault will stay off
couple drive cycles may deactivate fault condition.
