E250 M271 CGI weird whining noise when revving

Hi all,

This problem has been driving me nuts for the last 3 months or so. Only started happening around November last year. Car drives absolutely fine otherwise, plenty of power, shifts fine, everything is working as expected.

The issue is a whine noise as the engine is revving, especially noticeable from 1500-3000rpm.

So far I have changed both idler pulleys, the tensioner, power steering pump and the noise is still there. I don't think its the alternator or waterpump but I'm getting close to taking it into a local indy to diagnose.

Video here:

Any idea what the noise might be?

You can poke around with a dowl rod or mechanic's stethoscope to better pinpoint the source of the noise.

NOT QUIET YET...

Still winning...
  • new/rebuilt steering pump
  • new serp idlers
  • new serp tensioner
what gives??

-- double check pulley alignement ... MB uses a "walking pulley" on the water pump.

-- Any foaming by steering pump (inlet seal leak)

-- Do replace CONTINENTAL belt !!

-- Check accessories for freeplay

-- flush steering system oil for all fresh.
Last get a better quality steering pump.

I think it is the water pump.

Water pump pulley is getting the smooth side of the serpentine belt, not the ribbed part ( V groove ) which has better friction.

Also make sure your serpentine belt is good one if not genuine.
I read somewhere, some belts are not good when loaded on the smooth side, must be loaded at the ribs or V groove.

Take a peek at the water pump pulley, see any sign of abrasion from extra friction ?
Shake2 water pump pulley too.

Next time when you find the problem, update your post before anyone need to ask.
That is the minimum courtesy you should provide the post/topic.

Anyway good finding
