Drive belt design

I received a new MB belt from FCP and noticed the part number to be different. Double checled it and it says it ia the right part for the E-class. The grooves are a little narrower and flatter and it has this felt like material on the back side. The original belt thread groove is very different more like a regular saw tooth design and no felt. Are all of the MB replacement belts like this now?

According to the numbers, 6K 2398 and 6K 2397 they should be identical belts EXCEPT the 2398 belt is 1mm longer.

You may see a difference due to the old belt being worn down.

My W204 with M272 engine I installed a Continental 6K2404 and it works great. The Operators manual says to use a size 2401mm belt but the 2404 was less than $20. It wasnt felt but it did have an appearance where you could see the imbedded threads, it did not look like it was made of rubber. It looked just like the material in the photo below:

So the new belt is 1mm shorter. Should I be worried? Like the engine won't explode right? Tensioner should compensate right? The belt is exactly like that like with felt on the groves. The car is running okay but just making sure the new parts (pulleys, tensioner) I placed won't prematurely fail because these cars are very sensitive on parts.

There should be markings on the tensioner that show Min-Max indicating belt wear. 1mm should not make that much of a difference.

I've had my latest belt installed for over a year now and its still showing right next to the marking on the left. When it stretches and the mark goes towards the right side marking its time to replace.

Check yours and see where it lands. Side note I kept my old belt and put it in the trunk in case I ever need it again so i wont be stranded.

I have a few photos I took on mine before.

Heres a clearer photo from the Pelican parts article. Its for a W204 but should be similar to a W212. https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...eplacement.htm

I never pay attention to those markings, can't see it, blocked by aftercooler.
Thanks Tim
