What Does It Take to Repair a Front Sensor

My dear wife was washing the car today and told me something was wrong. She pointed to a sensor on the front of our car and said, see there. Something is wrong. Fix it. Sure dear.

Sensor pushed back into bumper

The way it used to be

So what do you think has happened to push the sensor back from the front of the bumper and what will be required to fix the problem?

My car is a 2010 model but I bet this parking sensor is mounted the same way.

I had one like yours in the rear bumper and I fixed it myself. It requires taking the bumper cover off the car.

Sensor brackets are melt welded to bumper cover inside surface with “wings” on the bracket flat on the bumper cover. Mine had broken off on one side that then allowed the sensor to retract in the hole just like your picture shows.

The fix I did was using a good 2-part 5 min epoxy to glue the bracket wing back in place.

I bet if you take it to a MB dealer they want to sell you a new cover as they don’t fix anything.

How do you get the bumper cover off? I haven't been under the car to look, yet.

Just doing some thinking here, maybe not possible, but ....

If I can get a loop of fishing line around the sensor, then pull it forward and apply some epoxy, Big Stretch sealant, etc, to keep it in place. Might that work?

This is for a 2010 but should give you an idea of what is involved to remove the bumper cover: https://charm.li/Mercedes%20Benz/201...20Replacement/

Heres info on the sensors: https://charm.li/Mercedes%20Benz/201...ance%20Sensor/

I don't think there is access to the sensor without taking the bumper cover off the car.

I have not removed it on my E550 but I did remove front cover on my S550. It has six screws total to take off and then unclip is away from the fenders at the seams. Very easy job.

On the S550 there are special brackets where the parts join on front of the front wheels. need to take that fender liner loose to get to the brackets. Then there are two screws inside from the head lights and then two very long threaded rods with nuts that you access thru holes in the lower grille. These long rods are for installing it back as you first set the bumper cover on those and slide it back in place. Makes it possible to do the job alone.

But I don't know if E-class is built the same way. You would think so or very similarly...

Just looked at the Timc300 post and the second ink in his post has pictures of the bumper cover inside and it is clear there is no access to sensors without removing it. Sensors are covered with a hard molded foam like they were in my 2012 S550.

Pictures also show those bracket "wings" that are heat melt fused on the bumper cover inside surface. The wings are those rectangular flat parts with bunch of holes from the heating tool.

Let me provide you with photos of facelift version bumper inner side, which would suit your 2016 car.
.
Bumper removal is easy, but best two people.

Zoomed.

I will be also re-glueing mine, my right middle one lost its adhesion to bumper on one its plastic wing/flap.
Sometime ago like 2+ years ago, I also glued 1 side, same problem 1 wing/flap glue un-done, I forgot left or right side, but it is the side one.

Yep..... remove the bumper.

If when you push on the sensor, it doesn’t push back into the bumper, it has probably reoriented itself in the clips and they are not broken. If you push on the sensor and it does go back into the bumper, it is going to be as mentioned above where you have to take the bumper off and fix the plastic clip underneath. These bumpers are pretty easy to remove. Normally, you are taking off the front fender liners so you can reach a bolt in the corner of the bumper in the wheel well. Then completely remove the front splash shield under tray. Then if you remove the front grill, which is self-explanatory once you get in there, you can see two more bolts when looking down at center. Once you remove those two bolts, the bumper will clip off. So basically the bumper has four bolts and some clips and the grill will need the intake removed from above it which is some clips and one bolt. It’s actually very easy, with vids on YouTube. Rear bumpers are just as easy, but require a super deep “bumper” socket.
