Make a guess.............

black petroleum grease
You used "high-temp synthetic brake grease" - It's a basic lubricant that quickly turns into a sticky glue. Only good as pads anti-rattle.

This side is for the pull cable and not adjuster...ha ha ha
Must be single protrusion ( teeth) and not double teeth if for adjuster.

rusty pad
Is that salty-water penetration rusting your steel pad. Where can this come from?

If must be rusty due to washing car very often by 1st owner and my driver.
Once a week car wash is mandatory, due to dust.
Even my rotor disc inner side, the contact surface for parking brake is not smooth...due to rust.
Look at the old parking brake shoe....what a disgusting surface condition.

Pushing in maximum while twisting is very easy with the special tool, no slippage.

The tool shaft dimension is very accurate, the spring stop edge is just nice and the T handle is good , removing and inserting the spring is so easy now.
With plier you must apply constant force to keep jaw closed to bite the spring, plier handle is not a T handle where you can spin easy and fast and no need to apply any force to a plier jaw.
Plier actually damage the spring cosmetically because it can only bite a tiny bit of the L shape part of the spring.
.
The middle cut slot to hold the L shape part of the spring is most important, because this L shape is a marker too for where the other end of the spring is at, the hook shape end.
The tool grip the L shape part of the spring nicely, no need effort on our part to "grip" the spring like when using plier.

Black is MB original spring. Shiny one is Ridex spring.
Total I have removed and re-install 4 times the parking brake pad and this cheap tool is a must have, too cheap to NOT have if you want to do parking brake pad with ease.
Long Nose Plier foot print is still large, it is not nice to use because the best angle to approach the spring is thru the wheel hub hole, where then you can have direct straight movement into the spring.
